More of a Software issue here I think. The setting for the heat pump isn’t low enough.
the intelligent heat pump range does now allow for cold climate heat pump that goes to -30
I think it says 10 degrees nothing in the minus temps. Newer heat pumps will now pull heat from much lower temps to be the most efficient. Having the propane furnace kick in at ten degrees defeats the efficiency of the pump.
I think it just needs a software fix to be able to set lower temps.

@1DBB ,
You have two configuration choices when you have a Heat Pump and a Gas Furnace. This first is called Duel Fuel which you are using. The second option is to configure your system as a single fuel system and have the gas furnace act an auxiliary heating. In the second option, the thermostat and the heat pump will activate the gas furnace when the heat pump is not keeping up or if the heat pump goes into defrost mode. If you need more to understand these options, just let me know.

Thanks Cooling Wizard. I’m not an HVAC tech, just a homeowner, can you advise if it’s just settings or do I need to do a wiring change too?

@1DBB ,
No, you do not have to rewire anything. As a Duel Fuel setup, you can set a parameter including DO NOT USE the propane heat. To make these settings you will have to use the settings and go to equipment. Change the the system type to Duel Fuel. The set the activation temperature to DO NOT ACTIVATE.

Sir, I am in Dallas Texas. I have a Nest Learning Thermostat (A0013) with a (Daikin) heat pump and just bought it (HP) because I got a GREAT Deal. I never wanted to use the heat Pump for Heat because gas is 1/3 the cost cheaper and is abundant. It cools very well. I continue to want to use the gas furnace for heat all the time and never engage the Heat Pump for heating. Do I need to TRASH this Thermostat for that to happen?

@jfrankha11, do you have a heat pump and a gas furnace make sure you set your thermostat up as a dual fuel system. Once you have it defined as a dual fuel system, you can specify that the heat pump is never to be used for heat and it will always use the gas furnace for heat.
