Nest thermostat gen 3 head unit compatibility with gen 1 base

Is the head unit of a gen 3 Nest thermostat compatible with a gen 1 Nest thermostat base?  I’m wondering if I need to replace the base plate or if I can leave the gen 1 base in place and attach a gen 3 head unit to it.
