Nest thermostat gen 3 short cycling heat

Devett

I have a gen 3 nest learning thermostat that is causing short cycling of my heat pump. My current equipment is a heat pump with a/c that is 7 years old with a 8 month old thermostat. I have a common wire that is hooked up and was installed with the original thermostat. There have been no issues with the A/C and until temps have dropped below 45 degrees no heat issues. Now the thermostat is cycling on heat for about 1-2 minutes then turning off for 10-15 seconds and turning heat back on. This cycling is non stop as the temp can’t reach the set temp. After putting the old Honeywell thermostat on the issue is fixed. Any ideas for a solution so I can use the nest thermostat?

Hi Devett,

Thanks for reaching out and for being a step ahead of us. I'd like to know more about it. In what country are you located? Please provide your Nest Thermostat's power readout. Also, checking your thermostat's Energy History will help you see what your thermostat was doing previously.

You can follow the guide below to check the power readout:

  1. Go to your thermostat Quick View menu.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Look for Technical Info.
  4. Select Power.

Best,

Jenelyn

Jenelyn,

Thank you for replying to my post. The power readout is 3.78volts. I am located in the United States. Looking at the usage during the days the unit was short cycling it appeared the thermostat was trying to heat for almost an hour at a time about 4-5x during the morning. This happened at least two mornings. I was able to recreate the short cycling by just turning the heat on. I currently have the old thermostat on and it’s working with no issues currently.

Just want to update this for anyone having similar issues. Google has still not contacted me or given me any kind of resolution. I am still using the Honeywell cheap thermostat with no issues. I would advise anyone looking into any Google product to look elsewhere

I have a similar issue, Heating cycle the circulation pump goes on and off every 1 or 2 minutes only for 1 second. Did all the trouble shooting and changed thermostat, worked fine. Google said it was the thermostat, so I bought a new one with the same result.
