Nest thermostat learning

I’ve had a Nest Thermostat since April 2022. How does this thing learn, it never calls for heat unless I either turn it on via the App, manually at the thermostat or ask Alexa. I’m assuming because it was installed in April, and we never actually required heat until the November that it thinks we just never required heating. I’ve also tried to set a schedule. The times requested come and go and never call for heat. I would consider myself tech savvy, but other than the benefit of being able to pre-heat my home from the app before I get home, this just seems an over priced piece of junk!

please help, my wife wants us to go back to a standard timer!!

Hello Bram1970,

Thanks for reaching out! I understand your frustration with your Nest Thermostat. It sounds like you've been having some issues with its learning capabilities and scheduling. The Nest Thermostat usually learns your heating and cooling preferences over time based on the adjustments you make. However, in your case, it seems like it might not be adapting as expected.

Here are a few suggestions that might help improve its performance:

  • Check Learning Settings:
    • Ensure that the learning feature is turned on in the Nest app settings. You can find this in the thermostat menu or the Nest app.
  • Manual Adjustments:
    • Continue manually adjusting the thermostat as needed. The Nest should learn from your manual adjustments and incorporate them into its future behavior.
  • Check for Updates:
    • Make sure your Nest Thermostat is running the latest firmware. Sometimes, updates can improve performance and fix bugs.
  • Review Schedule Settings:
    • Double-check your scheduling settings to ensure that the times and temperatures you've set are accurate and align with your preferences.
  • Consider Environmental Factors:
    • Nest Thermostats also take into account external factors like weather conditions. Make sure the thermostat is placed in an area where it can accurately gauge the temperature.

I hope these tips help, and your Nest Thermostat starts working more effectively for you!

Regards,
Mark
