Nest thermostat malfunctioning

Kishryan

Hello,

My thermostat was working normally, then all of a sudden the heat wouldn't turn off. No matter what I did it just wouldn’t turn off unless I turned off the main power to the furnace. I rewired thinking it was a wiring problem but that didn’t change anything. I plugged in the old Honeywell and it worked fine.

Any advice on a warranty or a fix?

thanks,

Ryan Kish

I am also having the same issue. It will not turn off unless I turn off the main power.

Hi folks,

Thanks for posting here in the Community forum, and I'm sorry to hear that your Nest Thermostats are running unexpectedly. Let's sort this out.

Are you located in North America or Europe? What type of Nest Thermostat do you have? Also, remove the thermostat display from the base, wait about five minutes, and check if the system turns off or stays on.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Zoe

Hi there Csaw,

Thanks for the information. Follow these steps:

  1. Shut down the HVAC system at the breaker box. Ensure as closely as possible that all power to the system is off before proceeding.
  2. Safely remove W1 wire. Take note that W1 wire should not touch any other wire, especially not a power wire. Leave the wire sticking straight out and separated from any other wires before restoring power.
  3. Leave the thermostat display off the base.
  4. Turn the power back on.
  5. Wait for a maximum of five minutes to see if the suspected component still turns on and stays on with the display removed.

Kind regards,

Zoe

Hi Zoe,  Thank you for your response.  Yesterday, after communicating with you, I began messing around with the settings and auto set.  I do not know which did the job, but the Nest is functioning now.  And I’d prefer to leave it as it.  I will keep your directions because this may happen again in the future.  Crossing my fingers.  Thanks for your help.  Csaw

Hello everyone,

I wanted to stop by and see how I could help.

Thanks for sharing some steps, Zoe.

@Kishryan, switching to a different thermostat isolated the issue. I understand that your old thermostat worked well, as this might be a wiring issue. You can try resetting the thermostat to default so you can recalibrate and configure your system. Resetting a device usually helps fix an issue. Give it a go and let me know if it works.

@Csaw, thanks for keeping us in the loop on what you've done to have your concern rectified—give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done! Don't hesitate to give us a shout by posting again for any other help in the future.

Regards,
Mark

I am in the US. My Nest is the 2nd Gen Nest Learning Thermostat. I have troubleshot everything and it still malfunctions and had to revert back to my old Honeywell which works fine. Something is shorted in the Nest or something else is causing it to malfunction.

My heat is off and the heat keeps on coming
