Nest thermostat revert to schedule after hold

Fakename
Community Member

Scenario: It’s a little too warm in my house, so I lower the temperature by a few degrees. I only want the temperature set point to change for one hour, so I set a hold at the current (i.e., manually adjusted lower) temperature to end one hour from now.

Expected behavior: After the one hour hold ends, the thermostat reverts to the regularly scheduled temperature.

Actual behavior: The “hold” ends in name only and has not reverted to the thermostat’s schedule. The app no longer indicates the thermostat is in a hold, but the lower temperature remains the set point until the next schedule change, which could be several hours from now.

Questions: Can the Nest perform my expected behavior, and, if so, how? If not, what is the purpose of specifying a time to end the temporary hold?

I am aware that the community is deeply disappointed that the Nest thermostats lack a basic hold function, and I share that sentiment. And I have already read this, so please don’t reply saying you’ve found a “great article” explaining how to hold temperature on the thermostat.

Hello Fakename,

Thanks for letting us know that the Temperature Hold in your Nest Thermostat isn't working as intended. I'd be happy to take a look at this for you.

Please check that the Routines feature isn't contributing to the temperature setup. Search for any thermostat actions available and remove them. Also, when a hold is active, the temperature from the main display shouldn't be manually changed, and the Hold Temperature shouldn't be set to Eco, as this is the only mode where an infinite hold is available.

Restart your thermostat to refresh by going to its settings, and try activating the Hold Temperature again to see the result. Keep me posted.

Regards,
Mark

Hey there,

I wanted to see if you still needed help. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Thanks,

Mark

I have no routines set and I restarted the thermostat. The hold behavior remains the same. Here is a specific case I just tested:

-At 8:00, I manually lowered the temperature to 75 using the Home app. I asked the thermostat to hold that temperature until 8:30.
-I confirmed that both the thermostat and app showed a hold at 75 degrees until 8:30.
-After 8:30, I expected the temperature to revert to the scheduled temperature, which is 76. Instead, both the app and thermostat show the temperature is still being held at 75 until 9:00, which is when the next schedule change will occur.

-The temperature setting did indeed change to 76 at 9:00 according to schedule. Both the app and thermostat reflect this.

Why doesn’t the temperature hold end when it’s supposed to?

Hi Fakename,

I apologize for the delay, and I'm sorry if the Temperature Hold didn't work as intended. By any chance, have you invited someone to access your thermostat as a home member? If so, were there any instances where they had to change some settings on the thermostat? If none, let's try performing a factory data reset on your thermostat. This usually helps devices recalibrate their settings.

Let me know if that helps.

Thanks,
Mark

Hello there,

I'm checking back in. Were you able to do the steps above? I'd be glad to hear from you — I'd like to make sure everything is working.

Thanks,

Mark

I am out of town but will try a factory reset when I return.  I'll update with results next week.
