Nest thermostat self-setting

Our Nest thermostat has worked flawlessly since installed, but in the last month it's started giving me fits.

Anybody else experiencing this issue?  It only started about 3-4 weeks ago, with no known prompting from us:

Randomly, in the middle of the day, it spontaneously sets the heat to 72 degrees.  Normal setpoint is 68 degrees.

  • We have a daily schedule programmed - 68 dF from 6:00a to 11:00p, then set back to 64 dF overnight - every day of the week.
  • The 72dF set usually happens randomly some time between 9:00a and noon.
  • We have learning mode disabled.
  • We have the occupancy tracking the phone of a person who WFH and is generally home all day.
  • Looking at the history, it says the 72 dF was "Set by your adjustment".
  • We have never, ever, not once, set the heat as high as 72 dF ourselves, and the cats can't reach the thermostat.

Any thoughts?  We are definitely NOT setting the thermostat to this temperature, even though it thinks we are.  Thanks.

We are having similar issues and would like to know what was your solution? Jim

@jolearycisco- I believe my wife figured out the problem, at least for us.

Our Nest is linked to our Google Home system.  In Google Assistant, both her profile and mine have "Good morning" routines.  In those routines was an action with the name of our thermostat, but no further instruction.  Apparently that defaults to "set temperature to 72 degrees", though there is zero indication of that information.  So any time one of us said "Hey Google, good morning", it would bump the temperature setting.  Since we usually do that upstairs and the Nest is downstairs, that was not obvious at all.

Deleting the action from our assistant routines seems to have solved the issue.

Hi everyone,

@Duke_W, thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community. This doesn’t happen normally. Let's see what's going on. There are a couple other reasons why the Nest Learning Thermostat changes the temperature automatically, for example. If you recently turned off the auto-schedule, the previous setup might still be in effect. The same goes if you have already set up a manual schedule and remove it, there might be a chance that it will adjust the schedule accordingly. This is part of the Nest Learning Thermostat algorithm, but it can easily be fixed by starting fresh on the device. Resetting it to the factory default and turning off the auto-schedule right away can do the trick. Follow the steps below:

  1. On your thermostat: Go to Nest Learning Thermostat Settings Reset Schedule
  2. Go to Settings Nest settings icon and then Nest Sense and then Auto-Schedule(Turn off Auto-Schedule).

Those steps will help us start fresh and clear out all the schedule and auto-schedule setup on the Nest Thermostat.

Jim, I’m sorry to hear that you’re having the same problem. You can do the same thing and monitor the case.

Keep us posted.

Best,

Renz

@RenzJ  - I reset the schedule (twice) and reprogrammed it.  The thermostat continues to set the temperature to 72 against a scheduled set point of 68 degrees.  It happens once a day, usually between 10:00a and noon.

There are two set points for each day in the schedule:  68 degrees in the morning (6:00a or 9:00a) and 64 degrees at bedtime (11:00p).  That's it.  Auto-schedule is off.

The history shows the 72 degree settings as "Set by you" but this is absolutely NOT true.
