Nest thermostat setup remotely without QR code

NancyG
Community Member

I get stuck after when it says "Choose the last 4 digits of the serial number" there is no place to enter it. I cannot enter the QR code. I entered the set up code as requested, but cannot do this next step as there is no where to enter the last 4 of the serial number!

Do you not see the option to tap “continue without scanning” in the app?

What model of thermostat do you have?

David,

It is ITEM No T3008US, which I understand to be 3rd generation. I have limited information as it was installed this week by an HVAC installer while I am living 2500 miles away and my furnace died up north (-15 degrees currently), which furnace had a Carrier smart thermostat. A friend will be at my house later today to try to help set it up.  After I posted this query I downloaded the Nest app to my phone. I had been trying to add a device (the thermostat) through my Google Home app. Through that, I selected continue without scanning, and after entering the 6 digit code requested, ran into the roadblock on the next step mentioned in my query. I am hoping we can get the thermostat connected to my phone thru Nest now that I have the Nest app. When I tried doing it remotely on my own yesterday, it appeared that I would need a number appearing on the face of the thermostat, correct? I hope with my friend there later today by the thermostat (which is connected to my WiFi) we can get the connectivity handled.

Not to worry! That is the Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd generation. It must be setup using the Nest app, not the Home app.

1. If you haven’t already, download the Nest app on a phone or tablet.
2. On the Nest app home screen, tap the Settings cog.
3. Tap Add product. The app will switch to a camera view to scan the thermostat’s QR
code.
4. On the thermostat, press it to open the quick view menu and tap the Settings cog.
5. Turn the ring to select Nest app and press to open it.
6. Select QR code. Your thermostat will show you a unique QR code to scan with the
app. If it doesn't, tap Continue without scanning in the app and select Get entry
key on your thermostat instead.
7. Follow the remaining steps in the Nest app.

it did not work. The QR code appeared, my friend who is there at the thermostat took photos and emailed it to me but it didn't work to scan the QR code from the photo she took. I then tried the next steps, entered the entry key, and got a message saying to choose the number that matches your thermostat's display, follow the instructions on the display to find it. A little wheel kept spinning and the process didn't advance. we tried multiple times. I really would like to set up this thermostat so that I can monitor the temperature remotely during this cold weather.

Hello folks,

I'm dropping by to see how I can help.

Thanks for helping here, @David_K.

@NancyG, I appreciate all your efforts in adding your new Nest thermostat. Setting it up remotely won't work, as you need to be physically with the thermostat itself to communicate with your phone during the process.

You can ask your friend to set up your thermostat for you. He can install the Nest app on his phone or tablet, but you may need to provide the email account you prefer to use for the setup. Once he was able to login, he could follow the steps shared by davidking. So once he successfully completes the setup, you can login back to your phone's Nest app, and you should be able to control and monitor it remotely.

Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Regards,
Mark

Hi NancyG,

I'm checking back in. Were you able to do the steps above? I'd be glad to hear from you — I'd like to make sure everything is working.

Thanks,

Mark

Hello NancyG,

No, I have not been able to set it up, unfortunately, as the thermostat is monitoring a furnace in a northern state with freezing temperatures, and I will not be there until mid-April. Fortunately, it is a brand new furnace!! I am hoping I can get someone willing to download the app and do this, and then once they do that, have it connected to my email address. I would like help when I can get someone to do this.

I am waiting for someone to set it up on site for me, and it hasn't been attempted yet. Can you leave the thread open for now? My friend who has access broke her arm two weeks ago, and I really can't move forward with this right away. Sorry for the delay in getting this addressed at my end. I appreciate your responsiveness.
