Nest thermostat software update?

skinnyJM
Community Member

The Nest thermostat software update history webpage states the current software version for the Nest Thermostat (not Nest Thermostat E or Nest Learning Thermostat) is:

"Version 1.1-11 - released January 26, 2022
Bug fixes and improvements"

As of April 28, 2022, mine is still on the previous version (1.1-9).

At the thermostat a manual check for updates gives the message "Up to date".

Was the new version's roll out halted for some reason?

Hi skinnyJM,

Thanks for bringing this up to us.

The software updates for Nest thermostats should automatically be installed once it is available. There are updates that are not yet available to download in some areas but we are still rolling it out to our users.

Please bear with us and continue checking for updates for your device.

Best regards,

Ryan

Hello Ryan,

My nest thermostat is located in Daly City, California. Is the new firmware available in my location yet?

skinnyJM

It's still on 1.1-9

Hey skinnyJM,

I understand — this means that this is the latest software version available for your device as of the moment. I'm afraid we don't have a way of forcing an update on Nest Thermostats.  Rest assured that as soon as one is available for your device, it will automatically be downloaded and installed as long as your thermostat is connected to a stable WiFi network and has a battery level is 3.7 volts or higher.

Best,

Melba

My thermostat is also stuck on firmware version 1.1-9.

Not sure where the 3.7 volt requirement comes from. These thermostats come with two AAA backup batteries that are only capable of 3.0 volts total when new. The Settings screen my the unit shows battery status is Good with 2.880 V. The Power screen shows input power is 37-38V. Going to the Version screen and doing an update check says it's up to date.

This certainly looks like a problem on the server side, not at the thermostat.

My Nest thermostat is stuck on 1.1-9.

I do not have a C-wire with my system, so I purchased the Nest Power connector. Unfortunately, the power connector was not detected by my system. I was hoping a software update would help.

My battery says it is good at 2.91v.  But I am not sure how you are supposed to get 3.7 volts with 2 AAA batteries.

Something certainly sounds wrong here…..

If you're running 1.1-9 and the nest power connector is reporting 'not detected' go have another look at the wiring diagram and make sure everything is configured correctly. A software update will not help - the power connector isn't wired in properly 🙂

My Nest thermostats is also stuck on 1.1-9.

I contacted Google Care Team for assistance. They provided me step-by-step instruction to diagnose the issue, but it didn't work. They decided to mail me a new unit. I installed it. It is also stuck on version 1.1-9.

Sounds to me like this is most certainly not an isolated issue.

MelbaDT statement about 3.7 volts or higher is referring to the previous Nest Learning/E thermostat versions, not the newer more recently released lower priced "Nest thermostat" which uses 2 AAA batteries.

Thanks Ryan_G, but I guess not.

Still at 1.1-9 on the Nest Thermostat that the software update history webpage I referenced just above states had version 1.1-11 released for almost 6 months ago.

I guess we'll just live with it. Maybe when the next version is released it will actually be installed.

Thanks again.

Same issue here. Tried a factory reset with no success.

Hey folks,

Thanks for being here in the Google Nest Community.

@skinnyJM, the update should automatically be installed by your Nest Thermostat if it is available and your thermostat is connected to Wi-Fi.

@trizzle, what's the software version in your Nest Thermostat?

I hope to hear from you very soon.

Best regards,

Ryan

"@skinnyJM, the update should automatically be installed by your Nest Thermostat if it is available and your thermostat is connected to Wi-Fi."

Thanks for the reply Ryan.

The thermostat is connected to internet however, it isn't installing the update released 6 months ago, that's why I started the thread to ask is there a reason why it isn't available (or being installed).

No one has an answer.

Hi skinnyJM,

As stated, the Nest devices do update automatically, but if there's an update available and you're not seeing it install to your device, you can try factory resetting it. Yes, you would have to set it up as if it was new, but after a factory reset the device should check for the latest firmware version and install any available updates. Also, since settings are stored in the app, the settings will be saved through the reset. If you give that factory reset a try, let me know how it goes for you.

Thanks,

Jeff

We've already tried the factory resets.. this is obviously an issue on the backend.

Any update on this?  We've tried all of the above - but still sounds like it's on the server side.

I ask - because as it's gotten hotter in the house, the temperature detection in this thing is terrible (it's 4 degrees off) and causes it to continuously run.  I went looking for a software update and saw this.

Same with ours. I replaced the batteries last night. Hopefully that will be the trick for the temperature variance.

New batteries fixed this issue for me. They didn't show low or anything

Enough with the months of zero progress resolving this. We need someone to actually put in an internal support ticket at Google so a software developer or server admin can work with someone here to debug and monitor to see what is actually being sent and received by a thermostat that's still stuck on 1.1-9.

I checked the Device Information screen in the Home app this morning and it shows I'm now on 1.1-11. Not sure when it updated or why it finally did.

I’m having the same issue. I have two identical nest thermostats in my house. One upstairs and one downstairs. The downstairs thermostat is running the latest firmware. The upstairs one is stuck on old firmware and will not update, and when I try to update it says “up-to-date.”

downstairs has 1.3-10

upstairs is stuck on 1.1-11 and will not update.

My 2nd Gen nest thermostat is stuck on firmware from 2019 still. I've reset my modem and factory reset my thermostat countless times.

Hello there,

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your inquiry.

We currently don't have any news on the next software update. Your Nest Thermostats will automatically receive over-the-air updates about any software and hardware-related fixes or firmware updates as long as they're constantly powered on and connected to the Wi-Fi network.

Unfortunately, the Nest Learning Thermostat 2nd generation will no longer receive any software updates, but it'll still carry on doing whatever it was doing at the point when the updates stopped.

Please take a look at this article and let us know if you have more questions.

Best,
Mark

Thank you for getting back to me about this. My upstairs thermostat eventually did update automatically. what bothered me was that it was on old firmware and even when I tried to manually update it, it falsely said  “up-to-date”.

anyway, the situation is now resolved.
