Nest thermostat stuck in continue setup in Google Home

My problem is very similar to that reported by Rfbennett.

I have a basic Nest with mirror face. A few installation attempts have gone bad and now it is stuck and does not respond to touches on the bar. I have successfully set up one Nest and am trying to add a second for another zone in the same house. What I have tried:

  - Using Home to create a new Home on my Android, begin adding a new device, creating a new network. When it gets to the point of trying to connect to the Nest, it says "Couldn't connect".

  - Made sure Bluetooth was on. Reset Bluetooth, when it wakes up again it sees both thermostats and says it has paired with them. Still unable to connect when tapping "Try again" on Home setup.

  - Taking out the batteries for a minute, hour, and overnight does not help; as soon as the batteries are plugged in again the "Continue..." message re-appears, even before the Nest is re-connected to the base.

  - I know the wiring is Ok at the second installation because I was able to take the Nest from the first location, plug it into the base at the second location, and it worked fine. Now I'm trying to install the second Nest on the first base for convenience.

How can I force a factory reset of this Nest? There is no response from the Nest when tapping or sliding my finger on the touch bar so unable to get into the menu, and taking out the batteries hasn't worked. What is the magic incantation needed here? 🙂

Thanks!

Hello DT_NestReset,

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your inquiry. I'd be happy to take a look at this for you.

I appreciate all the steps you've taken trying to set up your thermostat. To isolate:

  • How far away is your thermostat from your router?
  • What's the make and model of the phone you're using for the setup?
  • Do you have other Nest devices?
  • Try uninstalling and reinstalling the Google Home app and try using a different mobile device for the setup.

Let us know how it goes.

Regards,

Mark

Hi Markjosephp,

Thanks for your reply, I started to wonder if this forum had gone away. 😕

Here's what happened next:

  - I got tired of messing with it, reported it as defective and ordered a replacement, to arrive in about a week.

  - After a few days I figured trying it again would only take a few minutes, why not?

  - This time everything worked as expected. Bluetooth connected, wi-fi hooked up, and it started controlling heat in that zone. I don't know why leaving it alone for a few days allowed it to work - neither phone (Samsung Galaxy S22) or wi-fi (nearby, plenty of bandwidth) was rebooted. Up and running fine... with another question about Aux heat....

Thanks,

Darryl

Hello Darryl,

I'm sorry if you feel that way; we're trying to be as responsive as we can.

Interference or a network thread are usually the reason why it's not connecting to the app for a first-time setup, but I'm glad to hear you were able to successfully set it up. If there’s anything else I can help you with, please let me know about your auxiliary heater.

Best,

Mark

Hey there,

I'm checking back in — how's it going? Still need our help?

Thanks,

Mark
