Nest using Stage 2 and it's too cold

Prenti2

I installed my Nest thermostat on Saturday, Nov 13, and it has yet to bring my home to the correct temperature. In the tests I ran, it does seem to turn on normal and Stage 2 heat. However, it keeps trying to use Stage 2 to heat my home while the temperature just keeps dropping. For example, I sent my thermostat to 66 overnight and I woke up to the house temp at 61 with my thermostat trying to use Stage 2 heat to warm it up. Even if I increase the temp to 7+ degrees over the current temp, it is still using Stage 2. I just want to heater to turn on! Is this part of the "learning" process or did I do something wrong?

P.S., I installed 2 thermostats (upstairs and downstairs) and they are both doing this.

Thanks!

It turned out I had the settings incorrect. I had them for conventional when they should have been for heat pump. It is working now.

Can you let us know the solution ?

How do we set it to heat pump?

I had to call a Nest Technician to set it up for heat pump.

I have the same issue although for cooling. I can not get the house to chill to my temperature. It keeps it at 80 and says Stage 2. I have researched on line without success.  This is not as intuitive as I was told.

Were you ever able to solve the problem?  I am having the same issue.  Cooling works during the test, but stage 2 cooling does not.  And when I get past the test to actually cool to a specific temperature, it wants to use stage 2 and therefore doesn’t actually cool.

Hi, I did not ever get it working properly but I think/hope I know how to do it. The room that was too cold in the winter is our downstairs living room. The nest unit itself is in the furnace room. I think what was happening is the nest would read the right temperature and go to stage two while the living room was still freezing. I am going to try moving the nest to the living room and see if that works.

I'm freaking cold!!  Nothing is working.

Same we switched to an $18 Honeywell thermostat and all is well now 🤪

I had to call a Nest Technician to wire it for Heat Pump. If you have an orange wire, you most likely have a heat pump, and for me, that wire went into the O/B slot. You will have to try to match your old wire locations to your new ones with the Nest. But it was definitely not straightforward, and I could not figure it out on my own. I do not have a direct answer; my solution is I called the Nest Technician and they got it to work.

Hey folks,

I’m sorry to hear you’re having trouble with this. No worries, we'll check this out. I'd love to know more about this and I have a few questions:

  • What type of Nest Thermostat do you have?
  • Could you share a photo of how your thermostat is wired?
  • What is the power reading of your Nest Thermostat? You can find this information by going to Settings > Technical Info > Power.

Looking forward to your response.

I appreciate the input, Prenti2.

Thanks,

Archie

Hey there,

Thanks,

We had a technician come out and it looks like our heat pump had gone bad and he could not find away in the nest thermostat to go to an emergency heat status using the furnace only so we had to put the old Honeywell back in place so we could get heat. He said the nest is great until it is not

Hi thanks so much but we ended up switching to a more simple thermostat where we can set it to a temperature and it stays at that temp. Thanks for offering help!

I had the * black wire connected which gave me two alt heat stages and my gas furnace did not support, heat would come on but no fan. Removed * black wire and now alt heat is working. Not sure why one would want heat with no fan
