Nest won't turn on AC; Status says cooling; Resetting by yanking batteries temporarily fixes it

My Nest worked perfect for about 7 months. I'm having a strange issue where for the last month it sometimes gets stuck in a state where AC won't turn on even though the temperature is outside of the set range. When I crank the temperature down, it gives the status "cooling", but doesn't turn on.

I yanked it off the wall, took out the batteries for 30 seconds, put it back on, and it started cooling!

Except... now I have to yank the batteries out every couple of days. Otherwise it gets stuck in the state listed above.

Even weirder, it's definitely hotter inside than the listed temperature. I have it set to start cooling if the temperature reaches 74 degrees. It will reach "76" degrees and then get stuck in the state listed above. After yanking it off the wall and hard resetting it, it will show the actual temperature as 78 degrees inside.

Anybody else run into this issue or know how to solve it? Definitely software related. This thing is causing me a lot more headache than it's saving....
