I’ve just bought a Nest E system from a friend. It is brand new and still sealed.
im going through the set up but on plugging the thermostat USB lead into the socket the unit isn’t illuminating and the set up process in the app can’t find the thermostat.
There are no lights at all on the display.
Is it likely that I’ve got a faulty unit or is there some sort of internal battery that needs to charge

Do you still need help with this? If yes, it seems that the battery of your Nest Thermostat E has drained and there’s not enough power being delivered over your system’s wires. I suggest that you both go through the suggested troubleshooting steps here https://bit.ly/3uBlTLV
