New nest already discontinued?

MichaelBarsott

I read an article that support for generation 1 and 2 is being discontinued. I have no idea if my nest thermostat that I bought a year ago has already been discontinued because there is no way to find out what generation my nest thermostat is. The closest thing I can find from the home app is

Technical information
Model: Thermostat-1.4

Which I assume means that I have a generation 1? Even though it's only 1-year-old?

I've seen the web page where you're supposed to be able to tell which generation you have based on the look, but it's not helpful at all. Isn't there a menu choice on the home app or on the thermostat itself that will tell me?

Hi @MichaelBarsott

If you set it up in the Google Home app, you have the Nest Thermostat (2020) or Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen).

If you set it up in the Nest app:

  1. Select your thermostat on the app home screen.
  2. Tap the settings cog.
  3. Tap Technical info.
  4. Refer to the numbers next to "display model”. The first digit of the number tells you what thermostat you have:
    • 1.xx is Nest Learning Thermostat (1st gen)
    • 2.xx is Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd gen)
    • 3.xx is Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen)
    • 4.xx is Nest Thermostat E

I bought the first generation and am happy with the way everything currently works with the unit and the App. I have no need to upgrade. Now, Google is penalizing early adopters for being willing to take a risk on new technologies all for profit. There is nothing wrong with the Gen 1 and Gen 2 units and there is no software changes that make them incompatible. It is a choice by Google as they know these products are very robust and don't need regular replacement. Do better by your customers.

This is off topic, please start a new post.

So my 1-year-old thermostat has already been discontinued and will no longer work from the phone and will become a dumb thermostat?

The words "display model" do not appear in my home app.

Google does have a dedicated page to help determine which model you have:

I saw that and it's not helping us identify which generation we have.

Did you set it up using the Nest app or the Google Home app?

The home app

Hello,

I reached out to Google support chat to verify this information. I have the same model number that your photo above shows. The person I chatted with indicated that this model is not one of the affected models.

Nice, thanks for letting me know.
