I have have the nest 3rd generation for about 5 years and I soon I would turn on AC you can hear it blow out cool air but it stopped doing it and always states it will take 2 hrs to cool now.  I went to sleep and living room was at 80 when I woke up 5 hrs later it was only down to 76 even though I set it at 67... why is this?

Because your thermostat is sooo smart it keeps the electricity down! Turns it on and off with out actually letting you know. Great for the grid but hot for you!

Check this out, return your nest product. Buy a $25 standard thermostat. My house now went from 3hrs of cooling to like 1hr.

Well it's an issue now. Looking online I'm not the only one who is frustrated. Wish it was simple but I guess that's asking for too much

Yes it is that's why I am here trying to figure it out.  Thank you

Hi folks,

Thanks for reaching out. I'd like to know more about it. It looks like there's a short cycle happening. A few questions: do you have a C wire connected on your Nest Thermostat? Also, when was the last maintenance of your HVAC system?

Please try the following:

  1. Restart your Nest Thermostat
    1. Go to Settings
    2. Go to Reset
    3. Choose Restart
  2. Turn off the HVAC system's power at the breaker switch.
  3. Remove and Reinsert the wires from your thermostat. Ensure to put them back on the same terminals where they're inserted originally.
  4. Wait for a few minutes, and then turn the power back on.

@Thll, could you please check if there’s an energy savings box in your house?

  • You can check it near the electric meter (possibly near their air conditioner).
  • It has 2 lights on it (one light is red, the other is usually green). This box allows the utility company to cycle your air conditioner off and on during certain peak times of the day.

Best,

Jenelyn

Good evening,

I do not have a c wire connected nor have I before and the last time the system was maintained was 2 years ago.  I have switched the w1 and y1 wires are per a nest agent but that didn't work either and lastly I have turned off and turn on my AC circuit but to no avail.  I have it set at 65 for the past 3 days and the coolest it has reach has been 76 degrees.

Hi Lenster40,

Thanks for keeping me in the loop. Please check your system's maintenance.

  1. Check the air filter.
    1. If it is dirty, or hasn't been replaced for over a month, clean it or remove it and replace it with a new filter. Make sure everything is closed back properly.
Note: The furnace will not turn back on if there is any door or cover open.
  2. Check the drip pan.
    1. This would be located on the AC unit, not the heating. You may need to open a door, or take a cover off. There should be a pan with water inside. If there is any water, it must be drained or vacuumed.
    2. If the AC unit has drain pipes instead of a drip pan, the water will drain by itself.

Kind regards,

Jenelyn

Thank you for the updated information. I did have an hvac guy come out yesterday, and he changed the filter and cleaned the outdoor unit which made it work for a few hours but now I have it set at 67 but instead of getting colder it actually went from 74 to 77 instead.

Hi folks,

@Lenster40, hi again! We're sorry for the delayed response. I want to check if you are still in need of any help. If so, since you have the Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd generation, one reason why the temperature keeps changing is because of the learning features on the thermostat that override the target temperature that you set. So to fix this, we can disable the learning features on the Nest Thermostat so that these learning features will no longer override your manual schedule set for it.

Let's try these steps:

  • Press the thermostat ring to bring up the Quick View menu.
  • Select Settings .
  • Turn the ring and select Eco.
  • Turn off both the Eco Temperature.
  • Select Done.
  • Turn the ring and select Nest Sense.
  • Select Auto Schedule.
  • Select Off.
  • Select Done.
  • Turn the ring and select Home/Away Assist.
  • Select Done.
  • Turn the ring and select Reset.
  • Select Auto Schedule.
  • Select confirm Reset.
  • Turn the ring to reset schedule.
  • Click OK.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Zoe
