No HEAT mode

My nest thermostat does not let me switch to heat mode - in fact heat mode is missing completely. The app shows "cool" and "off" modes. The physical thermostat just lets me turn cooling on and off. I've tried turning the temperature all the way up but that did nothing. I followed the wiring instructions. My previous (non-smart) thermostat works fine for heat and cooling.

Model: Thermostat-1.4

Software version: 1.1-11

I wire in "W" needed to be pushed in another millimetre and the thermostat completely reset. I did tell the app the initial time which wires I had, but I did it all again after the factory reset and heat is working now. So I'm set now.
Side note: i strongly dislike that I'm forced to provide my full address and give the app GPS permission just to configure a thermostat. If this thing wasn't a gift, I would have returned it.

The wiring dock for the thermostat has Y, C, W, G, R, and OB.

I have my yellow wire going to Y, blue wire going to C, white wire going to W, green wire going to G, and red wire going to R.

Cooling is working fine.

I just found in the app that I can view the wires that are connected. It thinks that "W" is empty - which I can see is for heating - even though the wire is connected. Unfortunately it's going to force me to do a factory reset on the device in order to make it try and re-detect the wires - it won't let me add W. The user experience with initial setup on the app and thermostat was terrible and buggy. If a reset works after adjusting the wires then I will close this issue. But for anyone reading this - avoid NEST thermostats. It's just been an awful experience.

When you were setting it up did you tell it you had a heating and cooling system as the system type?

Post a picture of the original thermostats wiring if you still have it

What wires did you tell the app you had when you set it up?

Hi there,

I appreciate your assistance @Houptee and @Patrick_Caezza

@mrfixit2001, I'm glad that you were able to address your concern by resetting your Nest Thermostat to default. I understand your concern providing your full address during the setup. This is to help your Nest Thermostat enable features such as Energy History, know the current weather and on Home/Away Assist.

Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Regards,

Mark
