I have been playing around with the API's lately and I discovered something puzzeling.
What you see above is a plot (generated with gnuplot) of data that I have been gathering from my Nest thermostat, using the Google API's. For now, I simply fetch the data every 5 minutes (using cron) and store it in a file. Then, each day just after midnight, another cronjob will parse the relevant parts of that file into a plot similar to the one you see above. It's still a bit crude, but good enough for me.
The orange line is the room temperature. The thin red line is the target temperature. It reflects the value of the '.devices[].traits["sdm.devices.traits.ThermostatTemperatureSetpoint"].heatCelsius' API variable. The green line indicates if the pump / burner was active (it was "heating").
Now, my schema has been set such that the Nest should have the room at 18 degrees at 8 in the morning, keep the room at that temperature and then allow it to drop after 2200 hours (ten in the evening).
What is puzzling me is that the Nest starts heating the room EXACTLY one hour before it should reach the 18 degrees temperature limit. It drops off nicely at 2200, as it should. But the red line,TTBOMK, should show the DESIRED temperature and at 7 o clock that should still be 15 degrees.
Can anybody here clarify the matter?
Is the API returning the value calculated by the Nest to ensure the room is at 18 degrees at 8 o clock - and so, is it simply a weird coïncidence that it is EXACTLY one hour off?

Hey fortean,
Thanks for reaching out. Let's check — what type of Nest thermostat are you using? Do you have a schedule set on your thermostat? Check out this link about Temperature schedules for the Nest Thermostat.

Archie

Yes, I have a schedule set on my thermostat. I own a learning thermostat (Nest V.3).
