Permanently disable seasonal savings

RSW_Michigan
Community Member

There seems to be several threads on this topic, none of them with solutions. Usually a Google rep says to follow these instructions:

https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9244739?hl=en#zippy=%2Chow-to-turn-off-seasonal-savings

The instructions claim that in the Nest app "If Seasonal Savings is running, you will see how many days remain and a Stop button." But Seasonal Savings is running and there is no indication of how many days remain and no "Stop" button.

The instructions also claim that in the Home app "If Seasonal Savings is active, there will be a notification". But Seasonal Savings is running and there is no notification.

If there is another solution, please let us know.

Hi @RSW_Michigan

I will let the Nest team know about this discrepancy you are finding between the help instructions and what you are actually seeing during the Seasonal Savings activity.  They should be able to clear this up and let us know about the missing notification and stop button.

Hello folks,

I'm chiming in to see how I can help.

Thanks for escalating this, @JillG.

@RSW_Michigan, I appreciate you bringing this up, and I understand that seasonal savings can be confusing. But I'd love to know more about this.

While the option of this setting may vary depending on the Nest Thermostat model you have, your thermostat will display a little yellow leaf symbol when Seasonal Savings is activated. Your issue could be with yet another setting entirely if it's having trouble and the Seasonal Savings indicator is missing.

To make sure you can opt out of the feature, please check out these:

  • Overriding Seasonal Savings: The scheme for Seasonal Savings should not apply when the temperature is manually changed.
  • Opting out of the program from the Nest app: There should be a History tab and a Settings option in the Nest app. When a program is disabled, it is inactive until the next summer or winter.
  • Disabling the program from the Nest thermostat: Your thermostat should also provide a History option where you can disable Seasonal Savings.
  • Opting out before the program starts: The only times the Seasonal Savings program is offered are during the summer and winter. When the program is ready to begin, a notification will be sent to your smart device, giving you the option to cancel it.

If the above options didn't help, your thermostat might be programmed with different features such as Auto-schedule, Home and Away Assist with Eco Temperature, Temperature Schedules, Routines action in the Google Home app, or Rush Hour Rewards. These features contribute to temperature change.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Regards,
Mark

Thanks Jill and thanks Mark. I'm getting messages that say "seasonal savings has adjusted your schedule", so that certainly implies that it's on. Perhaps the messages are being sent erroneously. If I have time I'll look into it.

But I think we all know what the solution is: an "on/off" switch. It's available for features like auto-schedule and early on and many others, and it's been suggested many times before. Google's lack of interest in this solution is curious.

For now I've disconnected the thermostat from the wifi. I'd rather have "simple" than "smart" 😉

Hi RSW_Michigan,

I'm sorry for the trouble this may have caused you. Can you share with us a screenshot of your Nest app's Energy History showing that the Seasonal Savings is running? It should appear at the top of the dashboard or calendar, saying that it's running if enabled.

Regards,
Mark

Hi Markjosephp, I don't recall seeing any message in the history that said it was running, but I received a message titled "Seasonal Savings" that said "Nest has finished adjusting your schedule. Your new schedule can help you save energy for the rest of this season." So either it is running, or it was running, or the message was sent in error.

A simple on/off switch for seasonal savings would be very helpful. Until then, I'll just keep the thermostat disconnected from the wifi.

The message was in the "messages" section of the Nest app on my phone.

Hello RSW_Michigan,

I apologize for the delay. Thanks for checking out the Nest app. It appears that the message you received happened after the Seasonal Savings. You'll get this notification to tell you that it's complete, and you'll save energy for the rest of the season if you keep its schedule. With this, you won't be able to opt out of the program again until the next season it becomes available.

In the meantime, you can still use your thermostat, as this won't affect other settings. But if you come across the Seasonal Savings being activated, an option to disable it should appear.

Let me know if you still need more help.

Thanks,
Mark

Hey there,

Checking back in — how's it going? Still need our help?

Thanks,

Mark

Thanks Mark, appreciate your help. I've decided to keep my Nest thermostat offline and adjust it manually, that seems to be the easiest solution. So yes, I'm all set!

Hi RSW_Michigan,

I appreciate the effort you have taken by letting it disconnect from your Wi-Fi network. Although you cannot control it remotely, you can still control it manually. If ever you need to reconnect it back to the network, here's your guide on how to add your Nest Thermostat to the Nest app. Also, feel free to create a new post if you need help in the future.

Regards,

Mark
