Please help me help a neighbor - A Radiant Question

Hi All, first time poster.  I don't have a Nest but my elderly neighbor does and it's behaving somewhat oddly.  She lives in an Eichler (glass house from the 60's) and has radiant heat.  In my experience with MY programmable thermostat, it can sometime be hours to hit a target so that's what we're dealing with.  She and her disabled daughter are homebound, maybe simplifying things somewhat.  TrueRadiant is enabled and the Max Duration is set to 0.

Her current schedule every day is 4AM: 63F   6AM: 65F   5PM: 64F   8PM 63F

I was in her house and 65F is comfortable during the day.   There's not a lot (barely any) of fluctuation in her schedule and I don't want to mess with that--she's generally comfortable.

The question is: in her energy history over the last 10 days, she goes anywhere from 0 hours of calls for heat to 7 3/4 hours.  Fine, I can see some deviation based on external temps in a glass house during winter; temps typically have ranged from mid-30's to mid 50's during this time.  But the heat is coming on at midnight to hit a target of 63 which is what the previous setting (8PM) is.  And she's complaining that it's too warm at night.  With the Max Duration at 0, I'd expect it to wait until the new temp of 65 at 6AM but it's coming on 6 hours early.

I'd be tempted to disable TrueRadiant to see what it does but it's an elderly lady and I don't have access except by going over and the tolerance for "winging it" will be low.  Can anyone make any recommendations for how to achieve roughly the targets in the schedule?

Just giving this a self-bump.  Anyone have any ideas on this?  Sorry for the long post, the TL;DR is that the ehat seems to be going on in spite of the Max Duration under True Radiant being set to 0.

bumpity bump.  anyone have any ideas?

Hi CantComplain,

Thanks for posting ― let's get this sorted out.

A few questions: what Nest Thermostat does your neighbor have? Check this link to know what thermostat you have. Since when has this been happening? Also, what troubleshooting steps have you done so far?

Best,
Mel

thanks for the response!

I believe it's the 2nd gen learning tstat.  TBH I was just happy it had the True Radiant option as it looked like not all of them do.  I think it was installed about a year ago and I'm thinking it's been behaving this way for the entire time as she said "the guy who installed it didn't do a good job."  Seems to be working fine and I'm suspecting it's hitting the low threshold overnight and turning on the heat, and that's what she's feeling.  The visit to her house and this post are the extent of troubleshooting I've done....

Was thinking of just bumping it down a degree or 2 overnight and disabling True Radiant.  Since it is set to the same temp in the evening and morning, I don't see it coming on to hit the morning target, esp with the "max duration" set to 0.

Any thoughts on this approach?  Thanks again for the response.
