Question about the Nest "No" Jumper wires needed

Hi Everyone,

I just purchased a Nest Learning thermostat and installed it.  My original thermostat used a jumper wire between the Rh and Rc terminals.  There was only one power (red) wire coming out of the wall. The instructions for setting up the nest directs not to install a jumper wire. Here what it states on the instructions, 

"Instead of using jumper wires, Nest Learning Thermostats use an internal jumper between the Rh and Rc connectors. A Nest Learning Thermostat will automatically use this internal jumper if your system needs it."

I connected the one jumper wire to the Rc terminal, which activates my AC with no problem. This morning, when turning on the heating, it doesn't work.  My question is, how does the internal jumper automatically work?

To put it simply, it just checks to see if there is power at both terminals and if not it connects them together. There is a little more to it than that.

• What type of Nest Thermostat do you have?
• How is your Nest Thermostat and your previous thermostat wired?
• Have you tried any troubleshooting steps so far?

I don’t know if this counts as solved, but we had to do a factory reset and we were able to get heat.

We have a Nest thermostat and our model is a thermostat-1.4. We have 5 wires from the old thermostat: W, Y, C, G, and Rc (with a jumper to Rh). First installed the Nest in the summer and chose cooling when setting up. Did not have an issue until we tried to get heat just this week. Wondering if we will have an issue come next summer and if we’ll have to switch back to cooling. Will another factory reset be needed?

Thanks for the update. I'm glad to hear that you were able to get your Nest Thermostat working. You should not have an issue with switching from cooling to heating. Please observe it for now and let us know if anything comes up.
