Random changes on Nest

TonyR1

I have a couple of Nest thermostats controlling two zones in the house.   I have Home/Away Assist and Learning switched off because the (old) house takes time to warm up so no use leaving the switch on until I’m in proximity and my schedule is too varied for Nest to be able to predict my heating needs.   So I set everything manually but then find later random changes have occurred.   So for example I will set it to Eco and Away when I’m going away which is confirmed on the screen but then later I will find one or both have been switched off Eco while still on away.  Or ahead of returning home I will switch off Eco and Away only to find an hour or two later, one Nest is back on Eco.  It’s random and frustrating.  No-one else has access to my account and it’s not been hacked.    So any ideas of how I get it to keep doing what I’ve asked it to do until I decide to make a change?

Hi TonyR1,

Thank you for posting in the community, I'm sorry to hear that the Home/Away is not working.

At the moment, i need to ask a few questions to give the correct troubleshooting:

Keep me posted.

Best regards,

Rusell.

Sorry for the delay.  They’re both 2nd Gen NESTs.   It’s been a random problem for some while now and its difficult to know what troubleshooting you can do with something like this.   So for example I was away and both NESTs were on Eco mode.   I was returning home so switched them both off Eco to warm the house for my return.   I waited until the display confirmed both were off Eco mode, set the the required temperature and heating.    About an hour before I got home I went to check.   One was up to temperature and the other had switched back to Eco mode.    There is nothing in the set up to do that.  I have learning mode off (my schedule is too irregular for that) and I have Home/Away assist switched off (the house takes too long to heat up for that to be effective.). Anything I’ve missed?

Hi TonyR1,

Thank you for your response. We appreciated all the information provided, therefore i'd like to share to you some steps below:

  • Go to Settings > Nest Sense > Auto Schedule. Select No and then tap Done.
  • Go to Settings > Eco. Then, under Heat to and Cool to, select one and turn the dial until you see Off. Finally, tap Done.
  • Go to Settings > Home Away Assist. Select Stop Using.
  • Finally go to settings > reset > schedule > reset and turn the ring to reset.

Let me how it goes.

Best regards,

Rusell.

Thanks.  Auto Schedule and Home Away Assist have both been off for a long time and the problem is still there.

There is no Cool To setting as there is only heating which is set to a Heat To temperature.

I don’t want to reset the schedule as I’ll have to re-enter it again if it is deleted.   The schedule is for when I am at home, not away.

An example of the problem.  Yesterday I left home for a couple of days.  I set the two Nests to Eco and then switched Home to Away.  I confirmed it was all set on the App home screen.   Today I lopen the app to check and it has switched from Away to Home with no input from myself.   What changes is random sometimes it is Away to Home, Sometimes it takes one or both off Eco etc.   And the reverse when I set off to return.  I switch off Eco and to Home but find a few hours later it has switched one or both back to Eco and/or Home to Away, all with no external input.

Hi TonyR1,

Thank you for your update. I apologize that you're still getting this inconvenience therefore i'd like to share to you additional troubleshooting and ask you some questions.

  • Are there any family members in the Home structure?
    • If so, multiple home members, Home and Away works best when all home members opt-in to share their phone's location to contribute to presence sensing.
  • Did you allow phone location in the Nest app settings?
    • If you chose not to use your phone location for Home and Away, the system will rely solely on device sensor data (like motion sensors from Nest Protect and Thermostats) to determine presence. This may take some time as the system learns to your typical home and away patterns. Also, we comment to you to take a look at this article:  Troubleshoot phone location for routines - Google Nest Help

there is another troubleshooting that you have to do below for this inconvenience:

Let me know it goes.

Best regards,

Rusell.

Hi

Just a continuing illustration of the problem.  Left home on a trip on Tuesday morning.  Set to Away and put both NESTs on Eco.  Checked an hour later and all was good.  Went to check this evening and both NESTs are off Eco and it is set to Home.   And clearly the house has been being heated to the at home temperature not the Eco one.

Now onto your questions, there are no family members with access.  It’s just me.   Home Away Assist is switched off but even if the NEST sensors are still trying to assist me why would they be switching it to Home when I have not been in the house at all to be detected?  I have Assist switched off because I don’t want it to try and learn my Home-Away pattern as there is no pattern to learn.

I’ll try the reset but don’t hold out a lot of hope for the switch it off and back on again strategy doing anything.
