Replacing my old Nest E thermostat with a working identical Nest E thermostat

My current Nest E thermostat is losing power and works correctly about 75% of the time. My daughter has the same Nest E thermostat (which she is not using anymore). Question 1 is can I replace mine with hers and what steps need to be taken? Question 2 is will I need to remove my old thermostat first (from my app) before I can add the new one? I should also mention I do not have a C wire but my old thermostat worked fine without one (I've had it for several years). Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi bmac6808,

Thanks for reaching out to us. Yes, you can replace your current Nest E thermostat with your daughter's unused similar Nest Thermostat E. The process involves removing your existing thermostat and installing the new one in its place. Follow these:

  1. Before starting any work, turn off the power to your HVAC system at the breaker panel to ensure your safety.
  2. Take off the cover of your old thermostat and disconnect the wires from the terminals. Take note of the wire labels or take a photo for reference.
  3. Follow the Beginner's guide to the Nest thermostat installation guide or the installation instructions provided with the new thermostat to mount it on the wall and connect the wires. Make sure to match the wires to the corresponding terminals on the new thermostat.
  4. Once the new thermostat is securely installed, turn the power back on at the breaker panel. Follow the prompts on the thermostat's display to complete the setup process and connect it to your Wi-Fi network. You will need to use the Nest app during this setup process.

It is also recommended to remove your old thermostat from the Nest app before adding the new one. This ensures that you have a clean setup and avoids any potential conflicts or confusion with multiple devices. Here's how:

  1. On the Nest app home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Tap the thermostat you'd like to remove.
  3. Scroll down and select Remove Thermostat.
  4. You'll then be asked to confirm your choice.
  5. Factory reset your Nest product. Select your product below for reset details

After removing the old thermostat, you can proceed with adding the new thermostat to the app by following the setup process provided by the Nest app.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Zoe
