Runaway heating when cooling

Ernienewmes
Community Member

Everything seems to work for a period of time. Then it seems to have a runaway heating issue while indicating it is cooling. I really need some help. I’m glad nest alerts me when the air conditioner, not responding properly( temp rise when it’s calling for ACI pull the air handling unit power, pull the compressor power.  With everything reset it seems to go back to normal until it loses it mind again.

@Ernienewmes , this might be a problem with your Heat Pump reversing valve.  The electrical coil on the valve might be going bad.  Do you have a B model Heat pump?

How can I tell if it’s a Model B

Well, Rheem and Ruud are B models.  It if you can get the model number of the outdoor unit I can look it up.  The other way is to set up your thermostat as a B model then run a cooling or a heating test. If it is cooling when it is supposed to be heating, you have the opposite, you have an O model.

American standard is brand which is actually Trane?  I super appreciate the help I have called out techs twice and everything is “Ok”. I also have a “blown compressor” under my belt.   I’ll get the model number when I get back home from my business trip.

I have been away for the weekend. I will check this out. At the moment it appears to be running nominally. But it loses its mind every few weeks
