Serious Problem I’ve noticed

chris8837

Are the programmers on this website?  There’s an issue with the Nest Thermostat and connecting to Wi-Fi after power outage.

I’ve read post after post after post about this issue and I can guarantee it’s an issue.

when the power goes out the nest will not reconnect to the internet. It will connect to my router so I can see the ip and MAC but it will not reconnect to the internet unless I’m physically there and reboot the unit.  Then it will connect

I have frequent power outages as it’s in a wooded area and a second property. So needing reliable connection is necessary in the winter.

a simple Esp8266 device with tasmota will connect flawlessly and those are 2.00 from China and community written software. This is the biggest tech firm in the planet and the device doesn’t reconnect to the internet after power outage?

I have called multiple times and every time the associate goes through pre-written scripts and says there’s no-one I can transfer you to as I work at home. Lol.

if I have an issue with my Home Assistant I can actually talk with the programmer and work out a way to fix.

Anyway is there is an actual programmer for the firmware on here please check this. It’s happened for a year and I’m about to just go with Honeywell or ecobee but I have a couple nest products so it’s just a hassle.

oh this is for the new Nest. The Nest E seems to be fine.

If this is a widespread issue I'm glad for another reason  I stear my customers to buy a Nest E or 3rd Gen over the new nest every time.

I'll have to think about this issue.....and probably finally buy a new version thermostat to put on my test rig to use for troubleshooting.

(Reddit @Dark_Mith r/Nest)

It’s certainly repeatable as every time there is a power outage the thing goes offline. It’s crazy. I have 20-25 devices up there and this is the only problem.  How is a  power outage not any focus on the developers.

apparently I’ve read the cameras have the same issues.  I use Eufy and they are flawless.  But why would it connect to the router but not the internet.

At the very least give us local control so when I remote in I can put the local address in and reboot?  Lol. Wild.

I don't know if it will help with this issue but I have had weird Nest ssues resolved by changing the DNS Server setting on the router  to Google DNS (8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4)  instead of using Auto or your ISPs DNS server......it can't hurt to try

Appreciate the idea. Mine are set to google’s.   I truley beleive there is something with the complicated way google does things on the firmware side. It’s probably some precaution, but it impacts the user.

I switched from ecobee so I could have seem less integration, but setting nest up with home assistant was insane. Haha. My hope is a developer looks at these and finds this issue.

I couldn’t make this up if I tried. So I called customer support again. They told me it’s known and there’s nothing they will do about it.

the guy said we don’t recommend you having this device as it’s in a remote location.  His words. ‘get another device as we refuse to fix this issue’. Lol. Wow!!!

WTF?

Wow.....

Hello folks,

I apologize for the late response, and I'm sorry to hear that all of your Nest Thermostats have stopped reconnecting to the network after a power outage. But I'm willing to look into this.

Environmental issues (too far from the router, interference, etc.) and power-related issues such as the thermostat draining its battery so it disables some smart features in order to save the battery until it recharges completely

If the battery level is at 3.7V under the Technical Info settings for the Nest Learning Thermostat and the Nest Thermostat E, charging them via the USB charger for an hour would help them recharge faster. For the Nest Thermostat 2020 model, battery disconnection by removing them for at least 2 minutes to refresh will restore its connectivity without resetting it to default.

How's it going with your thermostats? Are they still showing offline?

Keep me posted.

Best,
Mark

Yes still offline. I’m going up there this weekend. Since the start of this thread it is still offline. I’m going to toss it in the fire pit as this isn’t a viable option.  Don’t want to expose anyone else to the only smart device that isn’t supported. Shame that it has to be google. Shareholders are the only importance. I should know. I’m a stock broker. Lol.

Hello chris8837,

I'm sorry if you feel that way. We really want to get your Nest Thermostat back on track. These are the most helpful steps to figure out what's going on with your thermostat. Let's give them a try.

I'll look forward to your response.

Thanks,
Mark

I don’t mean to be rude, but did you read the post?  First your shouldn’t apologize for this…  do you even work for the company?   This company told me they know it’s a problem and refuse to fix it. The only solution if there is a power outage is to factory reset. Their words.

Hey there,

I totally understand you. I know how a factory reset helped smart devices recover and fix issues, but not all times a reset applies to all. To make sure that everything is covered here, can you share your support ID number with the representative you have spoken to so I can check for other options for you?

Regards,

Mark

Hi Chris,

I appreciate it. Big help! Can you check for the following settings details on the access point when you get home with your thermostat?

  • Quality of Service (QoS) settings
  • Device priority
  • Parental controls
  • Wi-Fi pause
  • Interference and attenuation

Here's your guide for the Recommended Wi-Fi settings on the router or access point. Once you have gathered the details above, let me know so we can move on to the next step.

Regards,
Mark

I remote’d in. Nothing wrong with router settings. All the recommended are active on the router. No QOS or parental. Auto and not using wep for encryption.

like I said I can see the IP on the LAN. It’s connected to the router.  Because google doesn’t give local control I can’t access the logs of this unit to see why it’s blocking itself from my account or internet in gen.  Again I’ve explained I have multiple smart devices up there. I even have redundancy built into the 24v wire. But the google nest uses batteries that aren’t rechargable. So I can’t just reset the unit remotely.  But if the unit is getting a full 24v the battery shouldn’t matter. If I saw the unit it wouldn’t say new batteries needed anyway. Been there. Voltage on the unit will be fine.

but battery backup should be for temp solution if you have gas anyway. Once power is restored these new units should connect to the internet and accounts regardless. Makes no sense if it has power not to connect.

im just going to go back to ecobee.  Worked fine with no issues. I just have nest at my house in LV. Older by the way. No issues at all there ever. Had them for years. I don’t even have to worry about redundancy.

If you have a solution where I can actually log into the unit locally I have access to everything up there. Let me know.

Hello chris8837,

Thanks for keeping me in the loop. I got all I needed. If you wouldn't mind filling out this form, we'll get you the right level of help.

Let me know once you're done.

Mark

Ok. Who are you?  Are you a programmer for Nest?  If so please update the firmware for local control.  Or give us freedom to the device.  I’ll guarantee you’ll sell one hell of a lot more units. Also work with the tinkerer. Partner with home assistant. Give a **bleep** about the end user that wants to have full control.  I’m sure the original guys that thought up the company idea were like that. Now corporate greed just completely washes through. At least after MSFT bought GitHub they kept it the same. Hope that stays true as well. Well enough about my rant. Lol.

I can’t make this up again. So I’m up here. Before I reset my unit says ‘account connected’ and it’s connected to the Wi-Fi. But I can’t access through the app.

you guys have a firmware issue.

I have 2 nest learning thermostats 2ng gen & 3rd gen, 4 3nd gen protects, 5 indoor nest iq cameras,  1 outdoor iq camera, 1 nest battery camera, 4 1st gen indoor cameras, & 1 nest hello and I have never had any issues with them not connecting to the internet after a power outage.....but I don't have a 2020 nest thermostat yet to run tests on.

I'll add power outages to my thermostat test rig and order a 2020 thermostat to test as well.
