Stuck on home icon with arrow

Help. I’m currently stuck on the screen that shows a smartphone with a home and arrow in it.  
I have downloaded the app. it won’t connect to the device. Using either authentication method. 
also I have tried holding the button down for 5,10.15 seconds. Reset. Multiple times. Left to charge over night. I’ve disconnected and reconnected everything multiple times and am now at wits end. I still end up with a useless icon frozen on screen 
If anyone can help that would be great. Many thanks.

Google think it’s faulty and have been waiting 4 days for a senior advisor to ring me ti arrange a replacement. Very poor service

I contacted them this morning and they ran some tests asking me to do this and that. Nothing worked so was told someone will be in touch. Guess i will have to wait a long time then 😩

I took it to a random shop and exchanged it for a working one cos it was absolutely futile and useless using Google’s abysmal customer service never using Google customer service again I’d rather ask for help of a 1 year old child
