Temperature Presets

when I go into temperature presets and I want to put in example of 74° for the heat for getting out of bed in the morning I have an issue.  if I set this at 74 for heat the cooling set raises up like there is a four or five degree temperature gap between the two.  so if I set my temperature at 74 for the heat in the winter time and during the summer I want it set at 72° for cooling it won't let me it'll only let me bring the cooling down if it also pushes the heat temperature down how do I stop it from doing this or is this just built in?

I may not be exactly sure what you're trying to do, but you can't have the Nest set to cool to 72 and heat to 74 at the very same time.  If you did that, your heating and cooling would both run all the time!  The heat would try to get up to 74, but as soon as it achieved 73 the cooling would kick in to try to pull it back down to 72, and so on.  So, yes, to prevent that system war, if you have both modes active there has to be gap between the heat and cool targets, with the heat target LOWER than the cool target.

let me see if I can explain this better.  I will either use heat or cool but not the heat/cool setting ever.  when I go into settings/temperature preferences/temperature presets/comfort I have the option to adjust the heat and the cool temperatures.  so let's say I set the heat to 73° which is what I want during the winter time.  now I want to set it to 74° during the summer time on the cool side.  the problem is when I move the cool down to 73 it now moves the heat down making sure there is a 3° gap between the heat and cool.  this would make sense if I was using the heat/cool setting.  but again I never want to use the heat/cool setting.  is there a way to set it up to eliminate this issue?

Hi folks,

@CBFox, thanks for the help! I think your response fits with how I understood the question as well.

@tommie_patten, how's it going with your Nest Thermostat? Let us know if you have other questions and we'd be glad to assist.

Thanks,

Hey tommie_patten,

I wanted to follow up and see if you are still in need of any help. Please let me know if you are still having any trouble from here, as I would be happy to take a closer look and assist you further.

Thanks,

No I was never able to figure this out but a few people tried helping

I'm sorry to hear that my answer wasn't entirely helpful but I'm not at all surprised, since as I mentioned I don't have personal experience with that scenario.  However, another owner has just posted the same question, and I referred them to this thread.  I don't want to be giving bad advice!

Would you be willing to elaborate on why my answer wasn't useful?  Was it unclear?  Did it seem clear but you weren't able to follow the steps?  Did you follow the steps but the temperature settings still wouldn't behave as you wanted?  I'd be very grateful if you could describe what you tried to get the Nest to do but it wouldn't obey.  Then the forum might be able to answer other posters more helpfully.

I'm hoping someone else will jump in to help, as I have a Learning model (I assume you have the Nest not Learning not E model) and I have only a heating system.  So I can't give a definitive answer.  But I will speculate, hopefully not too annoyingly.

One thing it says online, in this article  https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9247301?hl=en,  is, "Note: Heat, Cool, and Heat • Cool modes each have their own temperature schedule. If you want to make changes to the schedule, be sure you select the right one."  That makes it seem like you should be able to go into a Mode and then build a temperature schedule from there.

On the other hand, you refer to the Comfort preset, implying that you want to use it in both Heat mode and Cool mode.  But you're also implying that your Comfort preset has both heat and cool targets.  I wonder whether you want to set up two new custom presets, one at 73 named Winter and one at 74 named Summer.  Then in Heat mode your schedule would be based on the Winter preset and in Cool mode your schedule would be based on the Summer preset.  (If every preset has to have both heating and cooling targets, you could set Winter to 73 heat / 88 cool and set Summer to 53 heat / 74 cool.)

Again, I don't really know what I'm talking about so I apologize if I'm sending you off on a wild goose chase!

Experts, please have a look!
