Temperature issues

Hi,

I recently installed a Nest Thermostat (non-learning).

I remember struggling with the wiring, and making it work. But it finally kicked on. 

Since then, temperature doesn't go below 76, and then starts to go up all the way to 82,even though I have it Held on 72.

I had the hvac guy come, and he says there's nothing wrong with the AC unit. 

Could it be that the thermostat is messed up?

What does the Nest's display show that it thinks it's doing?  Does it agree with you that it is supposed to cool to a temperature of 72 and hold there?  Or does it show that it's aiming at something higher?  Does it show that the room temperature is much warmer than that (76 or 82)?  If the Nest knows that it's supposed to cool to 72, and if it knows that the room is warmer, then it should turn the AC on.  Is your compressor running at those times?  When the hvac person came, did he test your system by using your Nest to turn it on or did he only look at the AC unit itself?

These questions are to help decide whether the problem lies with the Nest itself, or the way it's programmed, or its communication with your AC.

Nest shows that I have asked for 72. AC kicks in immediately after I turn it on and the room temperature is above 72.

Room temperature starts falling from 82, but gets to 76 at best. It then starts going back to the 80s,and Nest reflects that.

All this time the AC stays on and I can hear it purr loudly outside. 

I don't think the hvac guy tested it through the thermostat.

Hi Edward,

I think the problem is with the AC. HVAC guy is saying the compressor is losing power. He's recommending getting the AC replaced. Thanks for your help.

So, during the period when the temperature is rising back up from 76, the Nest's display still says it's telling the AC to cool to 72?  If so it sounds like the Nest is obeying you.   And the compressor (not just the fan?) is running, so the Nest is communicating with the AC.  What is the temperature of the air coming out of the vents?

I hope someone with technical hvac expertise will jump in here, because I can't guess why your house temperature is rising while the compressor is running.

I just got a new AC installed, and all is good. So it was the AC itself, not the thermostat.
