Thermostat not charging on base

Hello - my 4th Gen thermostat won’t hold its charge on the base plate. I’ve tried usb charging which works but when I the return to the base plate it quickly runs out.

the connections on the base plate all seem fine. I get the House icon and then it tells me that the thermostat is restarting and will be back in a minute. This then just repeats itself. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi PBChelts,

Thanks for reaching out to the community! I'm sorry to hear that your Nest Learning Thermostat 4th Gen won't hold its charge on the base plate, even when you charge it with a USB cable. It quickly runs out of power. Let's try to fix this!

I appreciate you checking the connections on the base plate. To better investigate why the Nest Learning Thermostat keeps restarting and displaying the message 'will be back in a minute,' I'd like to ask for the following information:

  • Did you receive any error code on the thermostat display or the Google Home app?
  • Is this Nest thermostat newly installed?
  • When did the inconvenience first occur?
  • Is the thermostat's display seated properly?
  • What is the make and model of your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment?
  • When you plugged the thermostat with a USB cable, did you see any light at the top?
  • Do you have a common wire?

In the meantime, I’d suggest the following steps:

  • Carefully remove the thermostat's display and check for bent connector pins.
  • Verify that all buttons next to the terminals are pressed down.
  • Try plugging the Nest Learning Thermostat into a USB cable for approximately one hour. Afterward, plug it back into the base.
  • After attaching the display, press and hold the screen for 10 seconds until you see it restarting. If the thermostat turns on, check for any power errors and share with me the power readings with the VOC, VIN, and IIN values by going to Settings > Technical Info > Power.

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,

Jenniffer
