Thermostat randomly starts heating or increasing

Anand1
Community Member

Thermostat changes temperature without input. There is no schedule set and other apps are not controlling the temperature. This morning the thermostat turned on at around 5 o clock in the morning without any reason. Yesterday the temperature was set to 20.5 and suddenly jumped to 26.5. There is no way it was set up that way because I would never have the temperature in house be 26 degrees. How can I fix this??

Hi, @Anand1,

Thank you so much for reaching out to the community. I’m truly sorry the heater is turning on or increasing suddenly. I’m happy to help you and find a solution.

To gather more information and provide you the best assistance, please provide the following information:

  • What type of thermostat do you have?
  • Where are you located?
    • If you're in North America, do you have a heat pump or a conventional system?
    • Would you mind sharing a picture of your wiring configuration?
  • Do you have a heating-only system or both heating and cooling?
    • If you have both systems, does the issue occur with heating only, cooling only, or both?
  • Are there any error messages displayed on the thermostat?
  • When was the last maintenance check for your HVAC system?
  • Has there been any recent changes or upgrades to your HVAC system?

In the meantime, follow these steps:

  • Check if Eco mode is enabled and disable it. Refer to this article for instructions: Set your Nest thermostat to heating, Eco, or off.
  • Turn Off Automatic Switching:
    • Nest App: Go to Settings > Home/Away Assist > Home or Away > select the thermostat > switch off automatic switching.
    • Google Home App: tap Automations > Home or Away > select the thermostat action > tap Remove action > Save.

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Ana

Hi Lucia

I have a nest learning thermostat, the new one in copper. I live in the netherlands with only heating.

How to i attach pictures? I have a picture of the units wiring and also a video that clearly shows the problem. There is no logical thing here. It just randomly changes temperature to a random number. No automation or anything is on. I’ve turned everything off.

No error messages

Last maintenance was probably 2 years ago but the honeywell thermostat we had before had no problems.

No recent changes except the addition of this thermostat.

Hi, @Anand1,

Thank you for your prompt response and detailed information about your system and thermostat. I appreciate your patience and cooperation. I apologize that the thermostat is still heating or increasing randomly. I'm happy to continue assisting you.

To help troubleshoot this inconvenience more effectively, please provide the following information:

  • When was your thermostat installed?
  • When did the inconvenience start?
  • Do you have more than one thermostat in your home? If so:
    • Do any other thermostats have heating points that could explain the activation?
    • For multiple zones, are only the radiators in a particular zone getting heated?
  • Do you have a system or a combi boiler? Is the control On/Off or Opentherm?
  • What is the status of the Heat Link's LED light?
  • Have you experienced any recent power outages?

While you gather this information, please try the following steps:

  • Disable Bacteria Prevention: On the display, go to Settings > Equipment > Bacteria Prevention > Disable.
  • Exit Manual Mode: If the Heat Link is in Manual mode, turn it off by pressing the Heat Link button once for one second.

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Ana

Was installed in march 2024, and problems happened from the beginning. We have just one thermostat on a combi boiler with opentherm. Heat link light is solid green. We have had some power outages but problems were already present before that.

Hi, @Anand1,

Thank you for your prompt response and detailed information. I understand how frustrating it is that your heater is turning on unexpectedly.

Based on the information you've provided, your system is indeed compatible with the Nest Learning Thermostat. It seems that the inconvenience you're facing might be related to the initial installation process.

To ensure a complete and accurate resolution, I recommend contacting your original installer. They have firsthand knowledge of the installation and can help identify the cause of the sudden heater activation.

Feel free to reply if you have any questions.

Best regards,

Ana

I installed it myself using the instructions. If you can supply information where the problem could come from then I can have look what might have gone wrong. But it seems to me like a software issue of some kind. Because it is able to control the boiler. Only problem is the temperature setting that keeps changing. What are the things I have to check to see if there is something wrong?
