I have a Trane system and trying to determine if it is compatible with the Nest Learning Thermostat we purchased. The Nest system guide and video seem fairly easy to follow however our Trane system has 8 wires and the additional wires are not mentioned in the Nest guide. Appreciate any insights on compatibility or next steps.

If you have a heat pump DO NOT install a nest. It is not rated for heat pump forced air systems. I did this and have had to pay out 1300$ to get the OLD thermostat replaced and a new circuit board to have heat again. Nest does NOT tell you that they are not rated for heat pump systems.

Not sure the article directly answers my question. It does not indicate if my existing system is supported or not. How would I find out that information, it is not clearly indicated anywhere and I want to be sure before attempting to connect.

Hi LoniC,

Are you able to provide the wires on your current thermostat? The picture is hard to see the wire labels. You can also enter your wire labels into our compatibility checker here. Let me know, as I would be happy to review.

Best regards,

Jake

Hi there,

@LoniC, Thanks for posting here in Community. Let's sort this out.

I was able to review your system labels and the labels you have on your old thermostat. To confirm, Nest Learning Thermostats are only compatible with systems that have one or two stages of cooling. On the other hand, the Nest Thermostat E and the Nest Thermostat 2020 are only compatible with one stage of heating, one stage of cooling, and an additional stage of either heating or cooling. Therefore, your system is not compatible with our Nest Thermostats due to it has three stages of heating.

You can review more about this by checking this article. Let us know if you have any other questions.

I appreciate the help, Jake.

Best,

Zoe

You can help by telling me how to get paid back for the $1300 I am out because of the nest?

Hi mickey68,

Thanks for getting back to us, and I'm sorry for the trouble this has caused you. Since Google does not provide, sell, or receive compensation for installation services and the exact services you receive from an installer, even an installer listed on this site, reimbursement for their service is no longer within our scope. However, the Nest Thermostat 2020 that you bought may still be returned for a refund to the store where you bought it.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Regards,

Zoe
