I just wired up my thermostat and the AC works fine but the heat won't kick on. When I swap the W and Y wire the heat kicks on when cooling is selected. Nest support says the W terminal is bad and I should pay to replace the thermostat. Is it possible to fix the terminal? Can I use the W2 terminal as a work around?

Unfortunately you cannot use the W2 as that would be considered Stage 2 Heat. Are you sure that the wire in W inserts fully and the button stays depressed down?

Yes, it is just as depressed as all the other terminals

Perhaps your backplate has become defective.

How can I correct that if that's what it is?

You might search for a refurbished backplate. What we do not know is did the 20-pin connector go bad or did the backplate go bad.

How can I tell

I do not have a test cable for the 20 pin connector. The only way you can personally tell is you would have to take your learning thermostat display to somebody else’s house which has a learning thermostat and see if it works with their heating system. If it works with a different back plate at a different house, using your display, then you know the 20 pin connector is good that the problem does indeed lie in your back plate. Other than that I have actually no idea how to test a 20 pin connector.

Ok, I'll look for someone that has one. Thank you

I saw one on eBay.

Is this a new install for the Learning thermostat? If it is, can you post a picture of the original thermostat wiring?

Did you try wiring the Nest like this?
Green - G to G
Yellow - Y to Y1
White - W to W1
Red - R to Rc (jumper not needed)
I strongly recommend using the spare blue wire to create a C wire. Just connect it to the C terminal on the Nest and the C terminal in the Furnace.

Hunter, there is a 2-year warranty on the Nest Learning Thermostat. Add a curiosity how long ago did you purchase your nest learning thermostat?

I bought it.used, but it was working normally for the guy I bought it from

If the base plate is in fact bad and if it is out of warranty, Google Nest does sell a replacement base plate .
