Why cant cool to dry be implemented as a software update for 1st generation?

Our AC system has a dehumidification mode - the fan runs slower to it pulls more water out of the air as the AC runs.

The Nest 1st gen thermostat measures the humidity. So it has the humidity value, and it also has a * connection to connect to the wire to demand dehumidification.

The Nest software is furthermore updateable.

Later nests have a cool to dry feature.

So can anyone tell us why Google can't add that feature to the 1st generation firmware? Did the engineer leave?

I am contemplating creating my own thermostat using an ESP8266 so I can get dehumidification as needed.

Hello DaleSchultz,

It's good to hear that you still have the first-generation Nest Learning Thermostat. I understand that some smart devices can even last upwards of 10 years. Even if it still functions well, the hardware and operating system are antiquated by the time a new software update no longer supports them.

But I appreciate your thoughts about implementing the Cool-to-Dry feature for your thermostat. Unfortunately, the Nest Learning Thermostat 1st Generation will no longer receive and support newer updates. With this, please let our product team know about it by sending feedback. Also, let us know if you have any other questions or concerns. Otherwise, this thread will be locked within 24 hours.

Regards,

Mark

This is something that should have been done when it was supported. The thermostat was obtained as part of a state efficiency program in December 2022. Last night I uninstalled it and put my old thermostat back.

The other incredibly poor design was that the big dominant number that you see across the room is not the temperature, but the setpoint, which is the same every day. Just plain stupid.

Hi there,

I'm sorry for the experience — I hear you, DaleSchultz. The 1st generation Nest Learning Thermostat was released in 2011, and software updates are no longer possible. I understand that it's still working on your end, but if you're looking for more features that would help your needs, it's best to have the latest Nest Thermostat versions we have.

If there’s anything else I can help you with, please let me know. Otherwise, this thread will be locked within 24 hours.

Regards,

Mark
