WiFi disconnects when AC turns on

Hi,

Installed Nest during heating season - no C wire but everything was working OK. Heating turning on/off no issues whatsoever.

Turning on AC immediately disconnects Nest from WiFi.

AC units kicks in for few seconds and turns off.

I started reading and figured C wire may be an issue and so I installed Nest Power Connector.

  • Nest Power Connector is detected (Settings > Equipment)
  • Power test returns Vin: 33.348 V lin: 385 PS: Y-385, YP-19
  • Wiring says: Connected to Y(P)-W-G-R
  • Battery status: GOOD

Not sure what else I can do here (run C wire)

I was under impression that Nest Power Connector will take care of lack of C wire.

Thank you,

Mike

Hello Mike,

I'm sorry to hear that you're having an issue with your Nest Thermostat that disconnects from the WiFi when the AC is running. I'd be happy to take a look at this for you.

To clarify, is it showing disconnected from your actual Nest Thermostat connection settings, or did it only go offline in the Google Home app? If so, I don't see any power-related issues based on the power readings you gathered. Also, does it reconnect whenever the AC is off?

Let me know how it goes.

Regards,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Thank you for responding.

WiFi disconnects on the Nest thermostat as soon as AC kicks in (it is not the phone app that's the problem)

I can hear the AC unit turning ON , then WiFi drops on Nest, AC unit goes OFF after few seconds and Nest reconnects on its own to WiFi.

One minute later Nest retries the same thing.

AC goes ON, Nest drops WiFi , AC goes off.

This hapened X amount of times when I was not home and I even get an email saying something is wrong as WiFi disconnect hundred times.

During heating season I had no issues with this. Heating worked correctly.

Anyway - none of this matters at this point.

I bought new thermostat wire and run the C wire (24V) to the Nest.

Everything works now.

I have a Nest Power Connector that I cannot return to Amazon anymore laying around 🙂

I can give it out for the cost of shipping if you know anyone who is interested in this thing.

Thank you,

Mike

Hey there,

Got it. Could you share a photo of your previous and current thermostats' wiring? Also, make sure that your Nest Thermostat's software is up-to-date.

Mark
