Wifi Issue - Nest 3rd Gen Thermostat

Hi,

 

I have seen many have had the same issue as me with the Nest 3rd Gen Learning Thermostat constantly draining battery when Wifi is connected.

 

I am currently using my Nest with no Wifi as it’s the only way to keep it online consistently at night and keep my house warm… Kind of defeats the purpose of a “Smart” thermostat if I can’t even manage it over Wifi…

 

Is there any solution or software update to fix this, or will google replace the thermostat?

Do you have a C wire connected to the nest?

No C-Wire but i’ve installed the nest power connector and it does not solve the issue..

I am seeing 3.871 battery voltage and 40 mA for the “lin”, indicating I should not need a C wire.

 

I had a Ecobee before that worked flawlessly for 2+ years, really regretting switching to the Nest…

You need to speak with someone who works for Nest they usually respond to the posts.

I wanted to stop by and see how I could help.

@Jayfly7, power-related issues are one of the reasons why the Nest Thermostat disconnects from the Wi-Fi network and vice versa; the thermostat keeps trying to connect until it drains its battery. But I'd love to know more about this.

A few questions: are you getting any message codes in the network settings? Do you see any "low battery" reports or other reports about the power? Also, what are the current power readouts on your thermostat?

Hi Mark,

No network codes that I can see, and I've also connected a Nest power connector to my Furnace which is still not helping the issue and I can confirm it is 100% installed correctly as I have installed these before.

I've tested 3 scenarios, while connected to Wifi on both 2.4g and 5g on my Netgear Nighthawk and also while connecting to my Wifi Extender right next to the thermostat using 2.4g

-Battery dies after a few hours
-Heat stops working, house drops to 60 degrees while sleeping
-I need to disconnect and charge via the cable
-Plug it back in... rinse & repeat

Since I live in Michigan and have an 8 month old baby, I cannot risk the house getting that cold so I've disconnected it from WiFi and have been using it as a manual thermostat which completely defeats the purpose of it...

For me, the learning functionality is not needed, I would be more than happy to exchange this thermostat for an older generation thermostat that connects to Wifi with no power issues...

I was using a Ecobee smart thermostat before, and used it for 1 year without a single issue... We switched to the Nest since we already have a Nest camera and doorbell, but it has been nothing but problems...

I already posted the power info in the previous response but I will post again:
-3.871 battery voltage
