I'm thinking of getting a nest thermostat and need to know if my wires will work. It's a older thermostat and has a white and a black single strand wire and a green unused wire

I assume this is a heating only system since only 2 wires are connected.
The Nest (non learning) you need a C common wire connected and the R + 24v and W for heat.
If you have a C screw terminal on the heating system you can use the extra wire and connect it to C at the heating equipment and C on the Nest.
Post a pic of the heating system where the thermostat wires are connected so we can see if you have a place to attach a C wire.

It is heat only. It says the picture file is to large. There are only two terminals on the back of the thermostat and it is operated by a spring. The green wood is unused if I could connect that for a c wire on both ends.

You need to check the heating equipment to see if it has a screw marked C on the heater.
Is it hot air heat from ducts or is this a boiler with hot water radiators or baseboard?

I will take a look when I can. It may have had base board heat but is forced air now.

If the furnace is fairly new it should have a C terminal if you take the cover off you will see the thermostat wires and a terminal strip with screws R W G Y etc hopefully one says C.

Hello there,
Thanks for helping here, @Houptee.
@Deeznutz970, I wanted to see if you still needed help. Have you had a chance to check your systems' wiring configuration? Please share us a picture if possible so we can see how it can be labeled with the Nest Thermostat.
Regards,
Mark
