I have a red wire and a black wire where my thermostat is.

Need help figuring out if my system is compatible

Hello.

Just 2 wires in the cable are connected? Do you have a photo you can upload of the connections for the existing thermostat? What kind of heating/cooling system do you have?

If it is just a standard 2 wire system it might work with the Nest E or Nest Learning. In some cases though the thermostat does not get enough power and requires a C (common) wire.

You can also use the Compatibility Checker to verify if your system will work with a Nest Thermostat.
