I am for the most part successfully using my Nest Thermostat to control a Mennonite built simple outdoor woodburning furnace with a blower that circulates warm air into the house. I selected gas as the heat source as wood was not an option, thinking the function is similar, it opens a vent that allows air into the firebox. Is this the correct selection?
Also, I have a Nest Learning Thermostat that controls my modern heat pump mounted six inches below the one for the wood furnace, and the temperatures consistently read one degree apart. Is it possible to calibrate them together?

Hello BullDawg_Bill,
It's great to hear that you're successfully using your Nest Thermostat to control your outdoor wood-burning furnace. In terms of selecting gas as the heat source, the functionality of the Nest Thermostat operates on the principle of controlling the HVAC system, and in your case, the wood furnace with a blower. While the specific mechanisms may differ between gas and wood, the Nest Thermostat's primary role is to regulate the desired temperature by controlling the HVAC system.
Regarding the one-degree difference between the Nest Learning Thermostat controlling your heat pump and the one for the wood furnace, it's not uncommon to have slight variations in temperature readings between different thermostats. Make small adjustments to the temperature until the readings are more in sync. Keep in mind that these adjustments might not be perfect due to the inherent differences in the systems being controlled.
It's essential to monitor the actual comfort levels in your home to ensure both thermostats are effectively maintaining the desired temperature. Let me know if you have more questions.
Best regards,
Mark
