No the bases are different (slightly) for each generation. This link goes over the differences, but you will need to use the provided base with your new thermostat

No. I even tried to put the Nest E in place of my Nest Learning, but it won't run (anymore). I have no heat for 23 days and google nest thinks its funny. Keep asking me if my house has power.
