do i need to replace the base if the new model is the same?

I'm replacing a defective (no wifi) google nest learning thermostat, 3rd generation, with the same model. do I need to replace the base as well? I just plugged the new display unit onto the old base and so far it's working

No, you don't need to replace the base for a like exchange. It's a good habit to replace it as it might have a hardware update.
