have a wire that was not connected to my original thermostat

The wires coming out from the wall were a red green white yellow and blue. The red wire has an hard jumper on the back of the thermostat from rc to r. The blue wire was not originally connected to my thermostat. Just wondering if I should be connecting that to my nest thermostat.

Sounds like you have a heating and air conditioning hot air system. The blue wire most likely is an extra that the installer wrapped around the bundle for future need. You can likely use the blue wire as a “C” wire (will also need to connect it to the C terminal in your air handler).
