I have a 3rd gen thermostat that's a few years old. The battery loses it's charge so I frequently charge it with the cable. Are the batteries replaceable? If not, can I buy the same thermostat to replace it and just snap it in without having to deal with rewiring it to the furnace?

Same issue here. Ours is a few years old, but I didnt think I'd have to go out and buy an entirely new unit every few years!

Yes to both of your questions, BUT replacing the battery inside can be tricky. The main thing to watch is the ribbon cable from the white back plate to the PCB board. Replace a battery takes about 10 minutes, but if in doubt take the display to a person that can do the job for you.
You can buy a display and replace, then setup up as the original. Obviously the battery would be the cheap option.

Hello folks,
Thank you so much for posting in this community. I’m sorry to hear that the Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd gen is losing battery frequently, so don’t worry; I’m here to help.
Please answer the following questions to help me assist you more efficiently.
When did the issue first occur?
Is the thermostat's display seated properly?
Are all the wires of your thermostat seated firmly in its terminals (with no loose or exposed wires)?
Do you see an error code or notification on the thermostat?
In the meantime, check out this article: Learn about the common or C wire, which might be related to the trouble you're experiencing.
Please feel free to share any additional details you think might be relevant.
Best regards,
Daniel

I installed a new thermostat but it also lost power so I called the service tech who said it wasn't wired to the burner so he installed a transformer and connected the device which seems to be working fine now. I can't understand how it worked fine for years without that wire connected to the burner.
