nest stopped working with black screen

Black Screen!  Wow, looks like a common problem... 

My 2nd Generation Smart Nest has gone black.  I have tried the recommended restart, reset, wiring all good, and nothing seems to work.  I believe it is a hardware issue.  because I have switched it out with my nest from upstairs and it is working.  But now I have no AC upstairs in Florida and it's 96 outside.  I'll take any help.  Thanks!

I understand how hard it is, and definitely a black screen on your nest is no fun, especially in Florida!

While you've tried restarting and resetting, which are great steps, since swapping the thermostats confirms the issue lies with the downstairs unit, it does point towards a hardware problem.

Let's check out a couple of things that might help:

  1. Can you tell me what type of Nest thermostat you have? You can usually find this information on the back of the device or by following the Nest thermostat you have.
  2. Is the thermostat's display seated properly?
  3. Does the thermostat charge with a USB cable?

If you can, please do the next steps as well:

 

  • Remove the thermostat display from its base and check if any connector pins are bent.
  • Check if the thermostat wires are secured in their terminals and all the buttons are down.
