30/40% Speed drop between Google Nest Pro speed test and connected devices

Tommaso
Community Member

Hey community, my name is Tommaso and i'm new in the Nest Family.

This is my setup:

  • Modem (5g Zyxel 5101) configured with IP Passtrough, firewall disabled, wired trough cat7 cable to my Nest Pro WAN port.
  • Then i have another Nest Unit (connected trough wifi mesh) on which i have connected a GB switch, from it goes around all the house with all cat7 cable and ports.

If i connect directly (wifi or wired) to the modem speed is around 200 download, 15 upload.

If i use a speed test on the connected Nest Pro that act as a router i get similar value 190 download, 15 upload.

On every other devices connected trough WIFI (iphone 12 pro, so wifi6) or even my mac wired directly to the switch or to second mesh trough a Cable (cat7) i have a 40% speed drop, around 120.

Consider that that i'm doing those tests in the same room so everything is very close to each other.

Am i missing something?

Also there is another way to configure the nest pro than use the app? is there any advanced setup link etc..?

Thanks for all the help you can give 🙂

Hey folks,

Appreciate your helpful response, @Jeff.

@Tommaso, a few questions for you: are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet service provider (ISP)?  How many devices are dropping from the network? Also, do you have any paused devices?

Give these steps a try:

  • Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
  • Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
  • Turn off IPv6.
  • Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
  • Unplug the power from your Nest Wifi Pro devices for 2 minutes.
  • If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,
Abi

Hi Tommaso,

Thanks for giving so many details about your setup. That always helps things along. I'm sure you've tested the mesh connection strength, but can you let me know what strength your WiFi point is reporting (the one attached to the switch)? Also, and this is a weird request but hear me out. If you have a Cat 6e cable to test between your modem and the primary router, can you swap that in and run your tests? I just want to rule that factor out. Finally, are you seeing the same speed test results using a third party speed test, such as https://goo.gle/2QXCbe1 as you see running the speed test in the Google Home app? If they're different, by how much?

Thanks,
Jeff

ciao Jeff thanks for double checking in!

I did the following test:

- I tested it with the original Nest Pro cable with no difference

- I tested without the other nest unit connected with no difference

- I tested with a cable attached to the nest pro instead that with wifi with no difference

- I used other speed test with similar results

If you have suggestions feel free to write it here.

On top of that lately i have even different weird issue: when i use the internal speed test of the app i get like 1mb down 27 up, while when i test from any attached device i have normal speed tests results (70/80 D | 15 U) with any speedtest website i get).

While i expect some different results at every run (is a 5g network i don't expect full consistency) this behaviour is quite weird.

Thansk @AbigailF. Answers below:

I am using a modem/router combo from your Internet service provider (ISP) (the zyxel) setup in ip passtrough mode. From the modem/router i have connected only the Nest. To the Nest wifi itself around 20 via wifi.

DNS was already those ones in some of the devices with no changes.

What it MIGHT did the trick was Turning off IPv6. I disabled that both on the Cellular network and the LAN setup of my modem. Now everything is ipv4.

I should check what happen turning on again (do i have the same issue?) but i'm not sure i want to broke again something that seem to be working now 😉

thanks for the support, very much appreciated!

Awesome — glad to hear that your issue is fixed. It looks like we can consider this one complete, so I will lock the thread shortly unless I can help out with anything else.
