Adding Older Network Printer to Google Mesh Wifi

mainstreet16121

I have an older networkable printer (LaserJet pro 400 series M451dn) and am having trouble adding it to the mesh node for wireless printing.  My gateway node (attached to provider modem) is 192.168.86.1.  The mesh node is 192.168.86.21.  Connecting the mesh node to the printer network port.. I've tried assigning a manual IP address to the printer network setup  192.168.86.222 and gateway 192.168.86.1

All seems connected with Google Home on android.

Nothing seems to work ...   Printing the network summary, it says NOT CONNECTED and no IP addressed assigned.

(Printer drivers work by USB.)  I can see the network active with a LAN scan from 192.168.86.1

What am I doing wrong!?!?!

Hey @mainstreet16121 .

There are several things that can cause the issue you are describing. Can you provide more details to the below?

  • What is the laptop/desktop make/model and OS?
  • What are you doing to try and add the printer to the laptop/desktop (i.e. installation)?
  • Do you have issues if you connect the printer directly to the laptop/desktop via USB?

According to HP, the printer is compatible with numerous devices and OSes so it is just a matter of narrowing down what is the cause.

I am not an expert on Google WiFI but I had a similar sounding problem with a similar HP LaserJet last year. My ISP swapped out my WiFi router (to resolve an unrelated issue) and my wirelessly connected HP LaserJet 200 would never connect again. Turned out that the (old) HP printer only supported up to WPA2 WiFi security protocol and the new WiFi Router required WPA3 as a minimum. I may not be remembering the WPA versions involved exactly (maybe 1 vs 2) but that was definitely the problem. I ended up connecting the printer via Ethernet cable (a hassle) but it’s been working fine since.
