I’ve moved into an apartment building that uses Google WiFi. The landlord has Nest WiFi points in the hallway on every floor to create a mesh that extends the WiFi throughout the building. It’s a 4 floor building where he (and the router) are on the 4th floor, and my apartment is on the 2nd floor.
He says he pays for up to speeds of 1.3 GBps. When I stand next to the next WiFi point in the hallway, at best I get 3-400mbps. Inside my unit, a couple walls away from the hallway WiFi point, I get ~30mbps. I told him I WFH and this isn’t working for me, so he gave me a WiFi point to put in my apartment.
However, I haven’t been able to get it set up. It’s factory reset, and when I try to add it to my Google Home, the error message I get after scanning the QR code is “Looks like you don’t have a Google WiFi network. To create a mesh network with this WiFi point, you will need to start with a Google Wifi base. Without the base you can still continue to setup your WiFi point as a speaker with the Google Assistant”. It can find the device fine, the light is pulsing white, etc — it just can’t find the network.
My hypothesis is that I can’t set up a Google WiFi point in my Google Home / with my Google account when the WiFi base / network is associated with his Google Home / his Google account. I don’t have any Google WiFi base in my Google Home — it’s set up in his. Hence, my hypothesis is that if he tries to set it up in his Google Home, he should be able to connect it to the network and it would work properly.
He is out of the country for a couple of days so I can’t actually test this hypothesis for a bit until he returns, so I figured I would ask here to see if anyone has run into similar issues. Also any thoughts on why his up to speeds of 1.3GBps is only 3-400mbps when standing directly under a WiFi point 2 floors under the base.
Appreciate any insight here!

Hi @Trains
If the landlord hasn't already setup that Wifi point, you won't be able to join it to the existing mesh Wifi network using your account and app, as they setup the network. If that was their intention, they need to set it up using their Google Home app.
As for the poor performance you're experiencing, Wi-Fi performance is affected by so many different factors. One thing I will say is Nest Wifi is designed for personal home use and is not intended to be used for sharing networks across multiple dwellings. For a variety of technical reasons, using them in this manner can cause slower Wi-Fi speeds and unreliable connections like you're experiencing.
