Assistant Speech Output - Nest Points Responding to Commands

CaliKathyT
Community Member

We recently installed a Nest Wifi network and smart wifi plugs. I have seen a few articles on how to stop the Nest points from responding to commands (i.e. turn off light) with a confirmation of action taken.

I see on the Home app that I can adjust the speech output, but only for my phone. Google Home and the individual points are not showing up for me to adjust.

How can I turn off the responses on the Nest points?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

This is a reference article that I found...

You usually want a response when asking your Google Home device a question. When you issue a command, however—say, telling your Google Assistant to turn on the lights—you don’t really need a vocalized answer. If you find it distracting when your Google Home responds out loud to every command, there are a few ways you can silence these replies.

Change your Google Assistant’s speech output

The best way to take care of Google command responses is to change the Assistant’s response settings, which you can do by opening the Google Home app on your phone and accessing the settings.

Under “All settings,” tap “Assistant voice.” Hit “Speech output,” and you’ll see all your Google devices listed. Select the one you want to change the settings for, then tap “Hands-free only.” Google Assistant will show responses on your phone with this option on, but it won’t say them out loud.

I'm trying to figure this exact same thing out.... so frustrating as I found the same article explaining how to do it but mine also only shows my phone and none of the speakers. Can't believe you haven't recieved any reply in 4 weeks. Let me know if you find success in doing this. Thanks!

Hey, CaliKathyT.

Sorry for the late check in on this and for the issues you're having getting your settings updated. I'm personally diving into my Home app and am struggling to find access to the settings as well. I'm not sure quite yet if this is an error in the app, in the article, or possibly some sort of bug. I'll check with an internal team on this and see what I can find out. Meanwhile, if you have made any progress on this, let me know and I'll pass the word along to our teams as well.

Thanks!

Hi Jeff,

Have you heard any update about this. There is a reddit thread regarding this problem and it seems myself and a few others are also affected by it. Thanks for any update!

I had the same issue and could not find this speech output setting on my Google Home app setting. The Google voice response is getting very annoying. Please help

Hey Jeff - I'm still unable to make these changes. Thoughts?

Hi, Eschybach.

It seems to be a new problem popping up, but there are enough reports going on that we should be able to start getting some good info coming in on what might be causing this. As of now I haven't heard of anything from our internal teams on this, but I'll report back when I do.

Thanks.

Hi, everyone.

Just as a general update, we do have a firmware update releasing now. It will download and install automatically to your devices and every user should have it before the end of April. If you receive that update and still don't see an improvement in your situation, please let me know.

Thanks.

Thanks for the update Jeff! I have checked my Google Home app and the setting is still limited only to my phone, so I will hold tight in case my devices have not seen the firmware revision yet and wait until later in the month.

I have the same problem. I work four to midnight. When I get home from work there are people in bed. I cannot use my Google home devices because if I ask for a light to be turned on or off it responds by telling me that it is doing what I asked it to do (??). Amazon echo devices have the ability to shut that off. They only do what you ask them to do and they don’t tell you that they did what you asked them to do. Again, (??) Anyway, it would really be helpful for a solution to this problem because we are very close to giving up on Google Home and just using echo devices. I’ve read it on a couple of threads that there is no way of turning that off. I find that very hard to believe. I can’t believe after all these years this is not some thing that can be turned off. Looking forward to a response.

Hey, all.

Just to give a bit more info, the update version for both Google WiFi and Nest WiFi will be 14150.43.80. If you are seeing a different version number when you check in Google Home, you have yet to receive the updated firmware. Let me know if you have any questions about that.

Thanks.

Hi Jeff, I have the same problem with my Nest Audio. How can I speed up the download of the firmware in my device?

Hi, GTA85.

There really isn't any way to force the update, as it will generally download and install when it's ready. However, some people have found that performing a power cycle or reset will prompt the download to begin. Everyone should have the update in the next 10 days or so regardless.

Thanks.

Hi Jeff,

I was gifted a brand new Google nest mini yesterday and set everything up... and I'm experiencing the same issue as everyone else here. In the Google Assistant settings, I'm only able to view my phone for the speech output. Can you please advise how I can stop the nest mini speech output?? I hate my devices talking at me, to the point it's not worth using them

Thank you for any insight you can provide

Hi Jeff,

My google nest mini and google nest hub devices all have the issue described in this thread regarding the inability to configure the speech output on these devices, only hands free for my phone. It has a message "might not be available on some of your devices based on your assistant language settings" the language setting in the app is English (us) so shouldn't be an issue

I am experiencing the same issue. I have two of the original google home devices (pre-nest acquisition). Is the speech output configuration limited to new devices only? I would really like to configure my google home to not respond when I tell it to do things like turn the lights on or off.

I'm having the issue on a Google Home Mini and it just keeps getting worse. Today the mini is now responding to every command I'm giving my television where as before it would silently just do the thing I asked. When will we be able to modify this setting so Google doesn't respond to any commands just questions?

1. You discover this issue. (For me it's the home mini btw.)
2. Nice to see others are experiencing it too.
3. Even better to see developer acknowledge it.
4. Almost perfect: Announcement of a fix.
5. Not so good: Update not delivered or not a fix for the issue.
6. Even worse: Developer seemingly goes totally silent.
Is this really too hard to implement with Google's resources?

Still hoping for that fix. Has anyone heard anything?

Hi everyone,

Thanks for posting ― let's see what's going on.

@Hiya1, to confirm, you do not want your Google Nest Wifi point to respond to your "Hey Google" command? If so, check the button next to the power cord, toggle the mic on or off switch. The switch displays orange when the microphone is turned off.

Keeps us posted.

Best,

Mel

Hi Mel,

My understanding is that if the microphone switch is disabled the Google home/nest will not actually carry out the requested action.

Those in this thread are hopeful that they can say "hey google, turn on the tv" and the function still occurs but without the "ok turning the tv on" at full volume waking the house up

Hey Mel, I think you missed what the thread is talking about. We want Google to listen to our commands but we want to turn off the command confirmation.

Example:
"Hey Google, turn off (Insert name of device)"
Action: Google just completes the command to turn off the device without saying a response that the device is off

"Hey Google, pause TV"
Action: Google just pauses the program without saying a response that the program is paused

So the point is that we want the google mini to do the action without a speech response

Yes, What ccota described is exactly the feature that we would like Google Nest to have. Do things and keep the mouth shut.

It can't be more annoy than asking Google to turn on lights for a Middle-of-the-Night Bathroom Visit and waking up everyone in the room.

Hey everyone,

We appreciate your interest and thanks for clarifying however, we don't have any news to share about disabling Google Assistant's automatic response before executing the command. We're always looking for ways to improve and we'll take it as feedback.

I also suggest that you send feedback by following this link. Let me know if you have other questions or concerns, otherwise I’ll be locking this thread after 24 hours.

Cheers,

Mel

Thank you for the update. I think we were all a little confused - by earlier conversations from Jeff, it sounded like this was supposed to have been taken care of by the firmware update.

Hi CaliKathyT,

Your Google Nest Wifi will automatically receive over-the-air updates about any software and hardware-related fix or firmware updates as long as it's constantly powered on and connected to the Wi-Fi network.

Best,

Mel
