Can’t add older Google Wifi point to Nest Wifi network

ScottieW
Community Member

I just set up a new Nest Wifi router with 1 Nest point. I tried adding my 3 Google Wifi points/nodes to my new mesh system via the Google Home app but haven’t been successful.

I separately tried to add each 1st generation Google point. The Home app wasn’t able to locate any of them. They’ve all been reset. My old network was deleted.

What do I need to do to add my old Google Wifi points to my new Nest network?

As long as they're factory reset (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/6246619?hl=en) and ready for setup (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/6191584?hl=en), you should be able to add them wirelessly to your existing network/ Google Home home.

Make sure you don't connect any puck but the primary one directly to the modem, else it won't work.

Are both sets of pucks bought in/ for the same location/ region/ country?

  • "Note: It's strongly recommended to purchase Nest Wifi from the country where you'll be using it. Since wireless regulations vary by country, you may experience compatibility issues if you move your Wifi device(s) to a different country and Google will be unable to offer support. If you're setting up a mesh network, it's recommended to purchase all of your Wifi points in the same country."

There is also an alternative way for setting them up that you could try:

Thanks for the response, olvarb. Confirming all devices were bought in/ for the same location/ region/ country.

Here's a question. Do I need to hook up one of the Google Wifi routers to my modem via ethernet cable in order for the Google Home app to recognize them? I thought I'd be able to simply plug each one in and add them one by one.

I have tried over and over again to add my old Google wifi point to a new Nest wifi network. Followed the instructions given at https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9548301#addpoints

The problem is the instructions say to SCAN QR code (or enter it manually) -- but the Home app never presents either of these options. And, if I simply follow the Home App (Add device --> Google Wifi) it just goes into a LOOP (searching for new devices ... add device ... Google wifi ... searching for new devices ...)

Hi, hemantb.

Sorry for the issues you're having getting your WiFi point set up. I imagine that's quite frustrating to try and sort out when it keeps failing setup like that. I have some questions that might help us get this worked out for you.

  • During setup, is your point near your router, or do you have it in the place you'll be using it? Try setting the device up near the main router and then moving it later.
  • Do you use any VPNs or network filtering software? If so, try disabling that briefly during setup.
  • Have you tried plugging the point into the Ethernet port during setup? Give that a try if you have not.
  • Have you tried factory resetting the point?

If you can give me a bit more info on the situation, I'm sure we can figure it out. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks.

Hello All,

I have tried reset to factory several times and still can't add the last point to my mesh.  Keep getting timeout after it connected to my network.   I'm stumped.

I tried add to new room - no luck

I reset to factory ( several times ) no work.

use different phones/ipad when set up - no luck

it's very frustrating.
