Can you use Use a Non-Google wireless Mesh Extender with Google NestWifi

Hi,

I have a Google Nest Wifi. I have 1 Google Pod and 3 Google Points to extend the range. Is it possible to add Netgear AC2202 Mesh Wifi Extender?

I am not getting the speed that I am expecting, especially the upload speed. My internet is 1000mbps download and 50mpbs upload, but in the room that I am working from is only getting 50-70mbps download and 10mbps upload.

Thanks

No, not as a mesh point. You could however use it as a repeater if it supports it, or hardwire it to the Nest Wifi primary point and use it as a pure access point only.

I'd rather check out using Nest Wifi routers only, as it has better range and performance. They are AC2200, vs Google Wifi and Nest Wifi add-on points AC1200.

They also have ethernet ports. Then you could also use wired backhaul instead, which would help even more:

Thanks a lot.

Yes, I am trying to use the Netgear Wifi Extender just as a repeater. If it can connect to the existing Mesh wirelessly and if it doesn't create a separate Network name. I'm hoping to improve the Wifi's signal strength.

Ok I will try using a Nest Wifi Router, but it will have to be a wireless connection because the Primary Nest Wifi router is sitting in livingroom. The second Nest Router will sit upstairs. I hope this may improve the signal strength. Although the current Mesh set up says Great Connection but it isn't great for sure. I've ordered a Nest Router and will be delivered in few days. I will update how it goes.

Thanks for your help.

Hi @EdwardT

So I went with the option of adding a Nest Router. I was able to successfully add it to the Existing Mesh. It’s working fine as a point. However I was not able to check the download/upload speed because I had to leave for holidays the same day. So I literally set it up and left. I will be able to provide a feedback in few days.

Thanks

Zeeshan

Hi All,

@EdwardT Sorry for a late reply, I was away and just got back.

So I tested the speed and here is what I got.

Before adding the Nest Router, the download speed was around 70Mpbs and upload was around 12Mbps.

After adding the Nest Router, (I've put it right next to my laptop, in our upstairs room), the download speed is now 120Mbps and upload is around 15Mbps.

So it has definitely improved the speed, the download is almost doubled, but upload has gone up only fractionally.

@olavrb is there anything else that i can do to improve the upload speed?

Regards

Zeeshan

Disable preferred activities could help, but other than I don't know of any relevant config available for us users.

Hi Zeeshan,

Thanks for the response. I'd love to know more about this. What website are you using for the speed test? Also, what's the speed test result on the Google Home app?

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,
