Connect google nest wifi to modem

Hi,

I am having the same issue as in this post from Thecheffer (unfortunately it is closed for replies). I've been through the same fixes but haven't been able to overcome the issue. Specifically this:

When adding the Google Nest Router in google Home app - I’m not given the option to enter my PPPoE details.  I go through the configuration process using the Google Home App (up-to-date) - it gets to the point where it wants me to Connect the Ethernet Cable [to my Nest Router] - I do this -, click next and I get a Connection Failed message, Next to continue and the loop just continues.

I’m expecting the Google Home App to ask me for my PPPoE details so it can correctly plug into my bridged modem and connect.

Any ideas on how to get around this? It seems like a Google Home App issue - but I cant seem to get around it.

Hello @edgarey77,

Thanks for posting in the community.

I understand you're setting up your Google Nest Router with the Google Home app, but it's not asking for your PPPoE details and getting stuck in a connection loop. Here are some steps to troubleshoot:

1. Verify the PPPoE requirement:

  • Contact your ISP: The first step is to confirm with your Internet Service Provider (ISP) if PPPoE authentication is even required for your internet connection. Some ISPs use different authentication methods.

2. Google Home App Issues:

  • Update the App: Ensure you're using the latest version of the Google Home app. Bugs in older versions can sometimes affect setup. Update from the Play Store (Android) or App Store (iOS).
  • Reinstall the App: If updating doesn't help, try reinstalling the Google Home app completely. This can sometimes resolve app-related glitches.

3. Modem Configuration:

  • Bridge Mode Check: Verify with your ISP if your modem is already in bridge mode. In bridge mode, the modem acts as a simple passthrough for the internet signal, and PPPoE setup would happen on the Nest Router. But if the modem isn't in bridge mode, you might not need PPPoE details in the Google Home app setup.

4. Advanced Troubleshooting (if comfortable):

  • Factory Reset Nest Router (Last Resort): If the above steps fail, consider a factory reset of your Nest Router (refer to your manual). This will erase all settings and restart the setup.
  • Manual Setup (For Advanced Users): If you're comfortable with advanced configurations, you might be able to set up the Nest Router manually through its web interface. This might allow you to enter PPPoE details directly. However, this is for experienced users only.

Please follow the steps above and let me know how they go. Thank you.
