Connnect Wi-Fi point.

I want to extend my Google Wi-Fi to my tuck under garage. I have 1 gig fiber into the house, a Google wi-fi router connected to the router, and three existing Google wi-fi points working fine.

I plugged in my new wi-fi point, opened the Google Home app on my iPhone 11, scanned the QR code, It said device found, connected, and then "failed connection".

THEN IT SAID "CONNECT ETHERNET CABLE".  The idea is to extend my wi-fi without an ethernet cable.

I suspect my wi-fi signal is too weak in the tuck under garage. This puzzles me as I have a ROKU connected to a TV and I do get streaming TV. I get HULU and Amazon Prime. I just want a better connection using a Google wi-fi point.

But I cannot get the new Wi-Fi point to connect. Any suggestions? Besides drilling holes in the floor for an Ethernet cable?

Thanks!

Hello @childcareguy47

Before drilling any holes, you may just need to connect an Ethernet cable during initial setup (or try setting it up closer to the primary). Once it's part of the mesh and has had a chance to update itself (if required), you may be able to disconnect it from that location and move it to where you want it.

However – it may not work perfectly in that location. It's possible the devices you have working in that spot now are connecting via 2.4GHz, which is slower than 5GHz but does go farther and penetrates walls better. The new Google WiFi unit needs to be close enough to the primary to get a strong 5GHz WiFi connection for itself, and if 5GHz coverage in that garage is weak, then putting a Google WiFi in there may just make things worse (unless you run an Ethernet cable from the primary – or a switched network connected to the primary).
